These look like the system that Ranger came up with.

The Backlands, Travers and old Aliens are perfect for some sort of aftermarket retrofit ride mode bar. Something along the lines of the lock bar that gignoux (excuse the spelling) uses. I’d love to see an adjustable elastomere system that allows a solution to the hard stop high back feel and forward lean in one. I’ve got the idea now I just need my startrek actualization machine!

Just curious what you think about retrofiting the lever of the Gignoux boot to other hard boots. I was thinking the Fischer and Alien boots are designed to maybe accept this type of lever. The Gignoux website sells the lever but not the metal nipple it attaches to on the heel? Also I was woundering what roll the paracord plays in in keeping the lever in place?

    Thanks

The 2.0 looks good they appear to have solved two problems with 1.0 (the strap falling down and the buckle poping open in crusty snow). Honestly i went too far in my mods…I would modify the boots in this order: 1. file down the plate as far as you wish(you can always use the spare plate they provide if you don’t like it) 2. Drill some holes (1 1/2″) in the medial side of the boot in order to loosen up the flex. 3. Place “Eliminator tongues” , this is a brand name, in back of the boot to ease the hard stop feeling (I shaped mine to fit and glued them in). All the aforementioned mods i recommend.

This is where i went to far!

I also trimmed the vertabrae/ hi-back of the boot, but for no really noticeable difference. If you trim the vertabrae you also have to change the length of the cable to the latch mech and lengthen the strap, pain in the ass. I eventually removed the the whole mech in the back and placed an old Spark speed cube above the vertabrae to adjust lean and drilled through the lower fin and t-nuted a bolt in for the forward lean stop.

    ^don’t do any of this^

While all this worked for a little while, eventually the “speed cube” cracked and the bolt broke! luckley it was in mellow terrain. I have fixed the problems, for now, and feel ok about how the boots tour.

On a different note i am leaving the country, so non-of this matters! When i get back i’m buying some Fischer Travers boots; The cuff strap is separate from the walk mode and seems super easy to mod. Plus i’ve seen the plastic model for $385 new.

Sorry, my free photo upload site expired, i may reload some of the photos eventually….

The cube is off my old Sparks, it was shattered inside so i cleaned it and filled it with g-flex.
The Vertabrae might catch on the block in ski mode? I can get the same lean I had before or a more vertical stance because the block swivels. Its attached with a t-nut through the back of the boot by the way.

I took the eliminators from the front and moved them to the back so no more soft tongue up front for now. Two sets of eliminators seem like they would take up too much space in the boot. I also switched to my old intuition liners from my Insano boots which are larger volume and softer.

Yes, the rear bolts could be sketchy? It seems like the strap and the existing tongue of the boot take most of the forward lean pressure though (a bumper where the bolt is would be great). The bolt is there as a final stop (I’m thinking of placing a nylon sleeve over it with a washer at the base to reduce friction and distribute pressure). The p-bex fin seems really solid (until it fails I guess). I’ve got to get out for some tours to see if this is reliable or not. I do have questions about how this will ski in split mode as well. I’m not going to do away with the plate and latch just yet.

La Sportiva could easily modify their vertebrae system for splitting without changing the rest of the boot at all if they had the motivation. Just a bunch of pinche skiers I guess..

Bolt at the bottom limits forward lean. Block at the top allows more erect stance, it also is softer.
Going to use double sided tape for the Eliminator against the spoiler!
Not sure if the walk mode will be limited by the bolt into the fin? The lower bolt doesn’t seem to take much pressure due to toe-side lean, so it seem legit on the carpet. Walked around the house and it seemed fine. I’m going to keep the hook assembly for now and just cover it with gorilla tape to hold the latch back. I need to get out for some testing, my home mountain looks good.

I placed the spoilers to try and spread out the pressure? (seems to work) I have some new mods to the boot that i will post soon. I think i may have eliminated the need for the plate all-together by bolting on a speed cube to work as a stop above the vertabrae. I still need to get out and test them, works great on the carpet. The holes work great (ala Kefler) for getting some more medial flex( my ski buddy was calling them powder ports)

Good to hear Taylor. Have you modified those boots at all? Hows the backstop?

The hook seems to be the weak point of this system (i’m not sure it will last). I tried sending a reply to your e-mail. Not sure if you got it? I have dremeled the down the inside of the plate and used some grease for lube. The hook has been wearing away metal on the plate (lots of small shavings in the interface of the hook/plate).

I have had the extra power strap sewn onto the egsisting strap to add length for the foward lean as well as used elimanator tongues. I just drilled some holes (1 1/2″ dia) in the medial side of both boots yesterday for softer flex. I’m thinking about a mod with para cord to replace the hook/plate mech (still in the pipe dream phase).

it doesn’t look like Spark crampons will work with the Ranger toe pieces, am i wrong? Other that that it looks great, nice work!

My brother had a hell of a time with the Prowder saddles this season (moving, coming loose and unable to get the bindings to slide on). I have made the switch to Phantoms and love the feel of the them so far. I haven’t had any problems with the Prowder set up personally and have run them on my solid board with old Sparks with no issues after useing lock tight on all the bolts…

Does your board have camber? If so, find the contact points (where the board touchs the ground tip and tail) and file forward/backward from there (45). Not sure what the rule would be for flat or no camber? I guess i would find where the nose and tail bulge? For a board like Furberg i’m not sure what to do.

5′ of snow on the peaks within the last 8 days. Good right side up storm, it layed down thick pow first then topped it off with some cold pow…. Every line should be filled in
