Sometimes you make a great plan, the conditions are perfect, the approach is easy, and everything is right when the world.

Other times you’re an idiot, the approach is ridiculous, snow is questionable, and you are left questioning your sanity.

Yup! I know and love this well.

We all have those days, and those are the ones that are most memorable. Looks like you lacked enough Type 1 fun on this trip to make it a true epic huh? But I bet you’ll never forget it. Adventure is the best part, the line is just a nice reward that you don’t always get.

Glad you guys made it unscathed and thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on the wedding/honeymoon, and looks like you scored Troms county very well. The Nordahl book was well worth the $75 I paid to get it ($25 for the book, $50 to ship it to the US!!!)

What dates were you there? Looks like we might have had some overlap. I arrived in Tromso on the 13th of May, but my gear did not arrive until the night of the 14th of May. Only had a couple of tours on Kvaloya (Buren, and Steinskartinden after backing off the approach of Store Hollanderen due to poor snow conditions) and a couple of tours in Lyngen (Daltinden, and also the area around Storegalten after backing off the main face due to massive natural slides during our approach).

By those dates, we didn’t have refreezing nightly temps, and there was a lot of natural avy activity through to May 19 when I left for Svalbard (and found much better snow!). But despite the lack of refreeze, if we avoided the big slide paths it was still really fun snow.

Good job with the Bobil. That’s got to be the best way to explore Norge … although we stayed at Magic Mountain Lodge in Lyngseidet and that was pretty awesome. Great vibe there, a true skier’s lodge.

That web camera looks to be from the LYR airport. Trust me when I say, “take a sled out to Atomfjella or take a boat across the Isfjord to St. Johnsfjord or way further north to Fair Haven and you will see much better coverage and much better snow.”

I’m still amazed at finding winter pow in late May at 79 degrees north … feels nice after this very dry California season.

    Well, it’s actually true.

The only isbjorn that you will see in my photos will be photoshopped ones. Let me see what I can do about “polar bears stealing our bacon” photos?

Here’s a teaser shot of shit about to get real … elsewise it’s going to be a while before I get the photos put up.

Okay, so here is a very preliminary schedule if anyone is down to join. I’d love a partner for Hood if anyone is willing to show me around!

    Thu 6/6 – Lassen
Fri 6/7 – Crater Lake, or MTB/climbing around Bend (anyone want to climb around Smith Rock?)
Weekend 6/8 & 6/9 – Adams with Jefe and company
    Mon/Tue 6/10 & 6/11 – Would love to hit Mt. Hood, but I need a partner
Wed/Thu 6/12 & 6/13 – Would love to hit Mt. Shasta if my knee isn’t too worked at this point, HW route. Could use a partner and am very familiar with this route (have done it 2x before).

Will have my MTB with me in case I get skunked on any of the above or my knee is giving problems (it’s mainly a problem when hiking around with skis on back, not when biking).

    Svalbard:

It was f*&!ing EPIC. Gonna be a while before I get my photos and words together, but Brennan Lagasse put up a summary here:
    http://unofficialnetworks.com/state-tahoe-backcountry-2013-xii-sponsored-alpenglow-sports-122615/

There is some decent terrain near the main town of Longyearbyen, but if you want gnar terrain and amazing snow, at least this time of year, then you’ve got to hire a boat and head way north. I really, really want to go back with a strong crew and set the expectations right off the bat (for the boat crew) that we’ll want to be out for long tours, so that they can adjust their sleep schedule accordingly. Due to our transit schedule and managing support logistics of the entire client group by just the captain and his wife/assistant/guide/do-it-all supporter, even though I split off with the “extra credit” client group, we had time constraints (plus I had a leg injury to manage) that prevented us from getting a ton of vert/terrain/gnar done on any given day … but I still got to tour 7 days in a row, and tick off some sick first descents.

Soooo good to experience full on winter again – next time you say “that’s a cold arctic wind” just wait until you’re in the arctic proper getting the sea sprayed and frozen onto your shivering carcass … 🙂

    thread drift –

Any of you PNWers want to hit some cascades between June 6 and June 15? I get back from Norway on June 3, have to do laundry on June 4, could drive up to PDX/Seattle on June 4&5.

I have alpine mountaineering gear and protection, but very limited skills. And I’m going to be breaking in my new Spantiks!

bump for 2013. This is one of the most beautiful TRs ever posted here.

Hopefully I get some just-as-beautiful midnight sun lighting when I am in Spitsbergen next week!

And tonight I hope to find some of that light on Kvaloya if my gear arrives in time!

I don’t know what I’m more excited for – the lines, the polar bears, or the Scandinavian girls! I just got off the phone with the receptionist at my hotel and fantasized that she looks as cute as she sounds. It almost starts feeling unfair that everyone speaks English – but I’m grateful that it makes for really easy travels!

So this is getting very exciting.

15 May I am touring with arild from splitboard.com/TGR
16 & 17 May I am touring with nedrapier from splitboard.com in the Lyngen Alps

*I need a touring partner for 18 May!!!*

There is plenty of terrain I feel okay doing a solo tour, but there is even more terrain I would love to explore with a partner! I tell funny stories and I take nice pictures with a Canon 7D and fat lenses, if that helps sell me as a partner!!! 🙂

19 May I leave for Svalbard for a boat tour of the mountains there … this is going to be an incredible trip! Props to nedrapier for jumping out to our Lyngen Alps 2013 Splitfest, aka, ned and schralph!

So thanks to the bc.com 20% off sale earlier in the month, I ended up with some of these.

I normally wear a 9 Malamute and went with a 43.5 Spantik to deal with swollen feet after big days, elevation etc. The size seems about right.

Here’s my problem – before starting on any boot customizations, I get a ton of heel lift. The heelcup is not nearly as well defined as the Malamute. Did anyone here find similar, and stuff their boots with any kinds of inserts?
