Forums Splitboard Talk Forum WTF is with all the spam attempts on this site? Viewing 8 posts - 1 through 8 (of 8 total) Author Posts September 20, 2006 at 9:34 pm #568062 knucklesplitter 340 Posts I assume most have noticed all the strategically placed posts with links to great sites about porn, valium, viagra, etc. Our newest user is “LindaGreen”, and something tells me he/she/it is up to no good. Is there anything that can be done about it? Maybe using those little letterboxes that require a new user to enter in the letters to keep out spambots? EDIT: Just read my post and now want to make sure it’s clear I’m not mad at BCR and whoever helps him with the site. Just wondering if it can be fixed – that’s all. One thing that could be done right now is to just not allow guests to post – you gotta be logged in as a real user. But then there are the smarter bots like “LindaGreen”, and the newest, “BigBigDick” (hmm). Something like you suggest might work there. I wonder if the latest version of phpBB has new features to combat these new bots? (I’m not a real web admin, I just play one on TV…) September 20, 2006 at 10:43 pm #590499 bcrider 4149 Posts @knucklesplitter wrote: EDIT: Just read my post and now want to make sure it’s clear I’m not mad at BCR and whoever helps him with the site. I have switched the registration so that only an admin (me) can activate a new user. This has cut down on the spammers posting new messages but not from registering. What’s really weird is they’ve figured out how to post in The Current Conditions forum…and they’re not even registered users, they’re guests. Unfortunately I don’t know how to stop it. Jim, I’ve search high and low in the software and I don’t see anything about managing “guests†September 20, 2006 at 10:59 pm #590500 powderjunkie 1669 Posts Don’t delete bigbigdick.
