The crew and I went on a little spending spree to Cabela’s and picked up a Circus Tent, AKA “The Alaknak”. So, our evil plan for the winter is to base camp in this little (12′ X 20′) wall tent and spend extended amounts of time in the backcountry. Oh yes! It is heated. We also purchased a nice wood burning stove! We thought we’d attach a few pics and let you all see how we’re going to be spending our winter. Hopefully not freezing our tookus off! The Alaknak II Winter Living Quarters… OH YEAH! Toasty warm by the wood burning stove… really toasty in late August! The Circus Tent after hours. It will look even better surrounded by snow! Does anyone else think we’re stupid? P.S. In case dead animals or guns aren’t your thing, Cabela’s can still be fun if you dress in camo and take a fart machine! September 11, 2006 at 1:53 am #590280 knucklesplitter 340 Posts If you’re gonna pitch a tent, it may as well be a big one. Very nice. Where in the Wasatch BC do you plan on pitching said tent? Can some of the Sierra Roadtrip Contingent crash there? 😉 September 11, 2006 at 11:54 am #590281 lewmt 570 Posts Awesome!! I wanted to do this same thing with the bc crew I run with last yr. Nobody could agree on the right mtn to set-up on – so – the tent never got bought & nothing done. Another lesson….checked in w/local Forest Service office & they were a huge pain. Not sure how it is where you’re planning to set-up but if its on public land just do it & say nothing. I woulda placed the tent in an area never travelled in winter here so discovery would have been very unlikely. Its a wilderness “study” area which amounts to defacto wilderness – so – no sledders there & no bc skiers wander into the area(besides us 😉 ). Very cool set-up…can’t wait for the TR’s September 11, 2006 at 6:46 pm #590282 karma surf 191 Posts I was solo backpacking this weekend in a remote Canyon here, and thinking of building a weekend getaway teepee out of downed timber… Came in to work today, and one of my friends here was telling me about a “fake granite boulder” they found in this same canyon. It was about 10’x15′, and had 2 levels! They got freaked out and left. This is a true story! If anyone is making a winter getaway home out there, check out Pow Mag’s past issues. Last season they had a whole issue devoted to building a BC structure with info on minimizing legal repurcussions if caught. Cutting down any living trees had serious legal penalties. Also, non-wilderness state owned land was recommended over USFS land. I’m not advocating to anyone to do this, but if you live in the Wasatch and want to get involved in a project, PM me! Be wise out there… Nice Tent- ya got any extra room in that thing one of these upcoming weekends? September 11, 2006 at 7:28 pm #590283 Wyomingsplit_ride 663 Posts One tip if you all plan on leaving the tent up all winter is that you better be prepared to shovel it out every weekend. If you do not keep it free of snow it could potentially collapse. I know of a teepee in the woods that takes a lot of shoveling in the winter. Pain in the ass, but it is worth the work. Karma-can you explain a bit more about the fake boulder? What was it made out of? Did it have a stove. Would be really interested in hearing about this. I dunno about that particular one but a crazy super wealthy old lady that lives in my town makes huge houses, small art studios, buildings to look like rock inside and out. Very cool stuff. Mobile Awesome Splitters Hostile September 12, 2006 at 2:05 am #590288 boardergirl 85 Posts Hey Kids… Sounds like there are plenty of other crazies out there too. I can’t believe you freaks think it would be fun to camp in the cold! We’re pretty stoked about the setup and are really looking foreward to a little snow so we can give it a good trial run. We’re pretty much planning on hauling it into the b.c. with snowmobiles and staying for a few days at a time, then packing up and heading home. You know, it is a circus tent and the circus does travel! That way we won’t get bored in one area! For those of you looking for a place to crash… well, as of now our weekends are booked with about 7ish people in the pimp palace. And, there are several others on standby for any kind of a bail. We’ll let ya’ll know if there are any openings! We’re still not sure about heating the tent on top of snow. Anyone have any experience with a wall tent on top of snow? We’ll definately post some more pics after the virgin voyage! September 12, 2006 at 3:41 am #590289 jibmaster 446 Posts You kidding me?! Theres nothing I like better than sucking up the cold, surviving a snow storm and crawling into my sleeping bag and waiting for the next day of skiing!!! I would much rather dig my jeep out of a snow drift and skin all day to get some turns than go to work. Your jib palace takes me back… Camp I at Hull Mountain (back in the day…) with the rope tent(disfunctional cabin tent- I’ll try and post some pics) … the dogs… the camp fire… the Hull bear… the keg…the epic skiing…all those years. It all starts over soon! I can hardly wait!!! September 12, 2006 at 3:52 am #590290 knucklesplitter 340 Posts Hmmm… I wonder if I can rig a roof on that 100yo wrecked cabin in 7undy Canyon. I think you might need more than just a roof. Pretty nice location, but looks like a squatter might have beat you to it. Or you might try this prime piece of property, in the same vicinity: It already has a roof. 🙂 If you’re nice I might let you in on the whereabouts. Maybe even let you take the wheelbarrow out for spin. I’ve never seen it. Gonna hike up there with the kids in a couple weeks and would like to check it out. I’ll drop you a PM with what details I can remember in a bit. September 12, 2006 at 8:37 pm #590295 MykeBurtonS70 59 Posts Nice tent but that stove looks a bit oversized. You sure its not gonna blast a hole in the side of the tent when fired up? Great idea though especially if you can leave it up for awhile and turn some mountain into your own private resort.
