OK, just starting a Style Congress here…not trying to ruffle feathers. Obviously, the best style is simply a big goofy stoke grin, but if we were to define maybe some of the things that don’t do our lovely sport the style justice it deserves?
What’s good snowboarding style? Craig Kelly comes to mind. Peter Line. MFM. Johan is style but it’s a different kind of style than I’m talking about (i.e. big, fast, and fucking wild).
so……. arms waving around….eh, not so much. hanging that rear arm out the back door….no. shoulders squared to the fall line or new-school stance?
i’m talking about the smooth stylie languid style that looks powerful and relaxed.
just interested in your perspective, really, how you think about riding and what looks good.
I think it’s cool to see different riding styles but I guess my favorite is the one I try to emulate. Its very surf influenced (lots of soulful turns and cutbacks, arms calm but out and leading the way) with a touch of skate influence (tricks and jibbing) and strong enough to ride in all conditions. Easier said than done and if I were to critique myself I think my arms get a little too over exaggerated with the surf style sometimes. I have to remind myself to drop them down a bit sometimes.
As for pro styles. I’d have to say Terje is one that I’ve always liked the most, without a doubt. He’s just sooo damn smooth. Peter Line’s skate style hugeness was always fun to watch too as was Jamie Lynn’s, Noah Salaznik (sp?), and Jim Rippey. Jeremy Jones’s lines always impress but sometimes his style looks a little out of control, maybe that’s what makes it so fun to watch though.
I have an alpine background… so i tend to stay too square… the positive thing is that my arms don’t wave around… I try to stay balanced as i would negotiate a slalom course… I prefer a flowy “alpine” style as oppose to a “jibber” style… but being able to go with what works is what counts… If your style comes with jibs and rails… well, even in deep snow, you’ll look like you’re ready to hit the park. I definately like a rider that can mix some surf style into it… Really like how you describe your style BCR. Soulful… Waves…
Who here as a greater heelside turn than toe side? I always end up pushing a bit too hard on heel side… i wish it would be more fluid.
As a reference, my buddy shot this on a very icy and boring day at the mountain… It was one of the first time i was ridding my Malolo. Nothing but frozen granular and left-over moguls under the lift:

So looking back, it sucks… but remembering the conditions helps it put into perspective why i was so stiff…
This one shot in early snow during October 2005 wasn’t so bad:
style is one of those things that is hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. anybody who has seen my riding style knows that they were NOT seeing it 😆 😆
stylewise i’ve always been a fan of jamie lynn’s methods, temple’s smoothness thru anything (used to follow him around at crystal, i swear that guy gains speed while traversing uphill!), craig and terje for just about anything, brushie’s old boned out stalefish, puppies and long walks on the beach.
Style is one of those things I’ve heard discssued a lot, but haven’t paid too much attention to (who knows, maybe I don’t have a lot 😛 ). I tend to judge a person’s style by how fluid their riding is (when riding natural terrain and pow versus pipe and park) and how easy they make difficult things look. It kind of just comes naturally the more you ride (though some people definitely have more of it than others). As for pro riders, I like Big Mtn Jeremy Jones, Dave Downing, Terje, and Craig Kelly. Also, Shaun Palmer comes to mind, but more on an attitude style level 😆

That’s my excuse for having no style. Storn and I were bullshitting once and we agreed that we need a few more years at the resorts. Not just style, I crash a lot too. What I need to do, especially in the backcountry with variable conditions, is to just relax. Less think=better style.
Sometimes I think about going to an advanced snowboarding camp or something like that. I doubt it will ever happen but it would probably pay dividends.
Funny, when I saw the thread topic, I was expecting a discussion of splitboard mountaineering style, what’s pure, what constitutes a descent, blah blah …. So some of my bias as a climber/at times summit obsessed snowboarded comes in.
But my take on the style/ethics debate: I don’t share Bcrider’s surf background, I’ve never skated, I know most of the riders mentioned, but don’t know enough to really talk about how they ride, but I’m not sure it matters (to me at least). I think good style is what makes you, as a rider, happy. If you finish a line, big or small, and can look up at your tracks and smile, then it’s good style.

I know some of the riders mentionned… but don’t know their styles… I don’t look up to pro-riders… I think you get inspiration from seing other riders and even other sports… I remember undertanding something about powerful turns by mountain biking on a slalom course and seing how it relates to snowboarding. Next winter, my riding improved and race results were better just by understanding this…
I agree with you tough… If you look at your line and you’re stoke… Then it’s all good! (and if it’s captured on film, it’s even better! lol!)
I wish. It would be much cooler if they were solid, and pink. It would only add to my style.
Which is still way less cool than snowboarding-with-a-guitar style. That’s just stylus maximus right there. Jim, next time you should unpack the gigbag and drop some chords *and* turns at the same time!
The only one I’ve posted to youtube was “somewhere I belong” but I hate what they do to the quality. They can also be found on the videos page. http://splitboard.com/site/Videos.html
In the vids you posted Bigjay you can really tell that Malolo likes to turn! Good stuff. 8)
