Doug, I am holding off running for 1 more month to see where I stand. I try to bike a few times a week, climb and play a little tennis and the hip feels pretty good. I figured come May I will make the call if I want to still try and do speedgoat. I guess this injury will prevent me from really giving it all I have and instead trying to cross the finish line if I do it.
How long were you thinking of spending on the traverse? It is something I have wanted to do the last few years that’s for sure. I also kind of want to R2R2R this fall if I can.

Ideally I’d like to shoot for under 48 hours, if for no other reason than not having to carry much food (water is plentiful). But reality being what it is, it may take me longer. Generally the running community does it under thirty hours, but I’m not sure how much night running I want to do. Besides I like to gawk at scenery, take lots of photos 🙂
Hmm. Can you pencil me in? Sounds hard but really fun. I would really definetly be up for a shorter run this spring/summer though as I will have a lot of runs to get in before the race.
Snurfer, that’s an epic trip you got going. thanks for sharing your pics. The LaSals look more filled in than I was expecting. How far did you get on the road up sawmill basin in the henrys? Was it snow covered before the campground? I think the road is sketchy enough when it is dry,. I ended up doing a lot of driving last week for work and a detour to the Henrys before going to Springdale for work this past week was too much for me. Think the snow will last a few more weeks on the east side of the divide?

Sure thing, I’d be happy to show you the SG course if you want.

I didn’t get far up Sawmill Basin road, mostly because my truck feels like it will come apart on rough roads. It did get pretty muddy and snow at the first blind swithback, so I bailed for Starr Springs and the Southern Henry’s. As far they go, I rode my MTB to Stanton Pass and could have driven there despite my truck anxiety. One could probably find some touring right from that pass, but I’m uncertain on the quality.
Love the B&W images, Snurfer–makes me crave some SE Utah time.
Just got back from waaaay eastern Utah and posted a few more pics to the Flickr album. I grew up 30 miles from the CO border so I headed out to my old stomp’n grounds for some extreme high incline scrambling and backcountry running. It’s sad, when I was a kid it would snow like crazy there, now any snowfall only lasts a couple days 🙁

From Wasatch Snowforecast http://www.wasatchsnowforecast.com/2015/03/22/getting-our-mojo-back/ Storm system moves in on Monday, lasting through Tuesday with mountain snow showers likely. Accumulations should be 6-12″ in the Upper Cottonwoods with 3-8″ elsewhere in the Wasatch.
Huh, guess I know what I’ll be doing after work this week, seeing that it doesn’t get dark until 7:30-ish. Dusk mission 🙂

Sweet pics Doug. I scoped that Split Mountain area a few years ago and thought there could be some sweet sandstone scrambling up there.
In riding news, there is good corn on the West Face Of Timpanogos. We rode the North Battle Creek route from the summit on Saturday. Skiable snow down to 8k’, with the lowest patches maybe just below 7k. Looked just like when I was up there a few years ago in May.
Way to stay motivated Switchback, it’s certainly been a rough season.
With yesterdays storm came the realization that I’ve only toured about five times in 2015, so early this morning I rallied up Cardiff. The conditions were pretty damn good! First time I’ve done anything remotely steep for a while and my first time riding any aspect of Superior, it was quite fun. And spending a hour or so on the skinner chatting with JiveStick was cool. Thanks Bob, hope you got some good turns.
Started at BCC road, skinned up eyebrow, dropped the steep west side before beginning the long skin up to Superior

Look back at what might be the best last turns of the season
I wouldn’t dream of sliding on the road 😉
Hope everyone has a good summer
Cheers!

Got out this weekend. Tried on Friday with an early start but got shut down with visibility. Felt like I was walking upside down for while. Snow was good though, so I tried again on Saturday. Got an early start and sunny aspects were damp by 8. Most aspects were wind damaged so stuck to more protected upper bowls. I’ve had my own personal experiences with bus size cornices breaking out on spring days. People die that way. Got down south. Couldn’t have a name like “UTAH” if you didn’t appreciate every aspect of it. Take care.
It was a fun few days while it lasted. I don’t know if it was the wind or lack of crowds but I don’t think I crossed a track in 3 three days of riding. I counted 3 people including me in Cardiff fork on a Saturday at 1100 in bottomless conditions…
Still a lot of snow in the Tetons if anyone feels like riding still. Was up there last weekend riding blower pow for thousands of vertical feet, and skiable snow down to 7300′ on sheltered north facing. I posted a report in the Trip Reports forum.
