Slightly off topic. During the year it snowed last, I was hitting the twin coulies on the 4th of July and on the hike out some 20-something guy had a dead rattler in one hand missing a head and trying to kill another. I asked him why he was doing that and he said it rattled at him. I remember thinking you are an asshole so I figured he was probably carrying a gun as it was right outside of Grantsville. I did want to be his next victim and I walked away. The moral is people are effed up in the head.

According to Kennecott biologists there are 35-40 cougars in the Oquirrhs. That is quite a few when you consider how small the range is! Here I am with one of the adult females in Butterfield Canyon:

She was lunging to get out of my arms when the pic was taken. Her front paws are HUGE, probably double the size of a similar-weight dog. She weighed 95 pounds, so I semi-jokingly said that at 200 lbs, maybe I could take her in a fistfight. The trapper who was there just laughed and said I wouldn’t have a chance.

Sweet pic mej. That sure does sound like a lot for a range that size. Does anyone know how many call the Wasatch/tri canyon area home? I hope no one hear thinks that Im for killing cougars. Ive never shot an animal in my life and would be more inclined to arm myself for human predators than a cougar. I think all predator are super cool. Cougars just creep me out.

Cougars aside, it was bittersweet today in the hills. I couldn’t see shit when the clouds were up but once it cleared up the snow got wet.

Snow was good though. 2 sleds and 2 helis doing their thing in Cardiff :nononno:

Does anyone know what happened in spruces yesterday? cops were blocking the lot around 5 last night

Awesome pic Matt! Nice work on the South Ridge Dan…pucker walking on those cornices!

Been sick think it may be the stomach flu or food poisoning. Starting to feel the strength return. Needed some fresh air out of the house.

Went for a quick lap in Days. Busy in the central Wasatch, Cardiff looked like a resort, Sled tracks, Helicopters, Lots of people out touring. Cant really see the tracks in NSuperior but it was pretty much tracked out wall to wall.

Managed to get an nice untracked shot from the ridge. Snow was still good.

Snow was more damp down lower and very saturated on the flats

Noted rollerballing and small point releases on south and west facing. Sweating like a pig on the skin up. I’d imagine almost everything will have a stout crust by tomorrow morning, except maybe high north facing?

Today was pretty marginal in the areas I traveled, yet still fun. Snow totals at adjacent resorts were greatly exaggerated.
At one point I could easily see my tracks from last Wednesday. At 10K’

The weird weather left me with a chest cold and the rapidly receding snow and exposed hazards down low are signs for me to turn my attention to other activities.
I’ve enjoyed everyone’s posts this season, as well as the few times I’ve toured with some of you. Have a great off-season.

    Cheers!

I leave you with some wildlife stoke from last Thursday’s trail run @ Antelope Island

Doug- Rad Antelope Island shots. I need to get out there. Is the south end of the island open?

    Mej- awesome shot

Swithback- that photo is pretty sweet, love the color of the sky

i’ve been hitting the river more than the skin track lately and haven’t been super inspired to get out unless it’s for a specific objective. Hoping from some big april and may storms to keep us touring into early summer. for anyone that cares the river has been fishing great and some good hatches of blue winged olives have started.

Looks like I might haved picked the wrong roadside slide path for my quick run this morning. Those lines are so neat and orderly. 9 tracks nearly took up the whole thing for me!

Snow rode bottomless, almost to the bottom.

    Land of enchantment…

Wasatch Surf, what river are you talking about? Ive been in the habit of only fishing storm days( because hanging out in wind and rain is better than wind and snow??) this winter so as a far as I concerned, bugs don’t exist on the provo to me.

started skiing up scotties around 5:30pm today, love spring dusk patrols. some tracks but nothing from the top. Jason and I rode it from the top after fiddling with a binding issue for a while. after about a 20 minute set back we dropped into the main chute from the top. clouds, snow, and some wind were fast approaching as well as the dark. Aired the little drop and scored some heavy but fun spring pow down to the trail. lines across the street look about as fat as they are gonna get this year.

Started at about 2:30 and almost turned around because the sun was starting to bake everything, but glad I didn’t ! The weather turned really incredible between 3-6pm, clouds rolled in, temps dropped and the snow was nuking! probably around 2-3″ fell while I was out this afternoon.

Got a couple of laps in some steep trees, snow was blower!

A little further down for some open faceshots! Temps, clouds, and snow saved the afternoon! Shade from the trees helped a bit too.

    deep turns today :headbang:

Cardiff, West facing, between 9600-7700, good stability, about a foot of new. Turns were good down to 7700 at 6pm due to the cooling temps, clouds, and the new snow that fell, saved it from a manky exit. Im guessing NW-NE and a few E/W aspects will still be good tomorrow   :twocents:

Mar, Hit that last line this past Saturday and the choke and the bottom was full of wet debris. Looks like it filled in nicely and rode better than it did for me. Nice work!

No way my legs would have been up for four laps of that goodness after wallowing for 3 hours in 20 inches of unsupportable snow.. Nice work mar sorry I couldn’t join you.

The internet tells me that georges bowl was the worse place to be yesterday. Oh well.

I got redemption today. Probably the best turns of the year for me.

We broke trail for about 3500 ft in slightly more user friendly snow before some friendly skiers caught up and finished the job 300 ft from the top.

They were nice enough to give us first tracks.

The clouds looked like UFO’s (or powder birds) coming to invade BCC

    sigs..

nice switchback! ha, you looked pretty bummed the other day 😀 glad you got some redemption, those turns look fantastic!

Speaking of fantastic, again what a day today. I thought the storm snow was done for and was hoping at best to ride some pseudo corn in tracked out snow. Was getting a bit excited as we had to break trail in White Pine today.

    no tracks?

    breaking in blower?

first tracks and damn good…hero pow pow

    Andy laying down the roost

    Kevin on Lap 2

Snow was still fantastic dry pow down to 9K and some sheltered areas from the sun below that. Crusts softened up on our exit by 1:45. Didn’t ever feel like the temps got out of control today, and a nice south west breeze to keep things cool. Get some!!
