I just finished my first split trip. I hate trails. But often the first few miles of a trip are going to be on trail. Questions:

The narrow trail I took undulated (up and down) which meant I’d slide downhill on skis with a heavy pack. I don’t know how to ski. I fell a lot. How do you guys handle these short sections?

Can you walk over gravelly sections with your skins on?

How do you guys get back down the trail (you can’t snowboard down it; I had to strap my board to my pack)?

Do you guys just avoid trails altogether?

Thanks in advance for your help.

screaming at anything close by works well to…

some people ski better with the ski’s straight edge in the middle (opposite to the skinning order)

I find that keeping yer skins on until you’re on a good steady downhill that wont leave you stuck inbetween two little bumps (memorize the trail on the way in)…

continually work at your skinning too; always think about where your ski is going. I find that my tails slip out lots because I forget to point my downhill toes out duck when there’s that wind slab down 10.

otherwise you gotta suck it up and either figure it out your way and… get in better shape 🙂 practice skiing lots on yer split!!!

If you ever go up the Asulkan Glacier Trail in Rogers Pass BC, on the way down after hiking the Triangle all day, take yer skins off and stay in ski mode right after the last bridge… the best craziest fuckin’ ride of yer life….
