    How is spring 2014 shaping up in the Chugach and Kenai? Is it as bad as I think I’m reading–high snowline and runnels, frozen rain layer for a ways above that–and then deep slab danger above that? Is there anywhere that’s looking decent, or less bad? Hatcher maybe?

    Turnagain & the Kenai got hit pretty hard by the melt/rain events in January. Lots of big slides ripped to the ground. Turnagain just got a nice dump, but it looks like it’s not sticking to the rain crust too well. Check out http://www.cnfaic.org/

    Valdez/Cordova Chugach is also bony. Haven’t heard anything from Valdez for a while, but I’m sure you saw what they were going through with the road being dammed/flooded by a massive avalanche. http://www.valdezavalanchecenter.org/ Currently in Cordova it’s snowing steadily, with the bulk of the storm forecast to arrive this weekend. Below ~1,500′ no snow for the most part. Above that, whatever is left is pretty much ice.

    Hatcher is great. Persistent slab does exist, sitting on a drizzle crust from November/December, but hasn’t proved reactive in tests or in riding. Did get hit by the warming cycle and lots of big slides went, but there have also been lots of really nice areas that were spared. http://hatcherpassavalanchecenter.org/

    Haven’t heard much from Haines/Juneau, not sure if they have snow this year or not. Overall it hasn’t been a season for the books yet, but things can change very quickly up here.
