At least approach skiers won’t mash out a skin track like snowshoes
This is their best feature. A smart mountain approach would be to lag in the lot while letting your splitter buddies break trail. Then ease up the track on your short skis tail-gunner-style while some tele skiers pass discussing broken bindings.
If you want to talk approach skis vs snowshoes I’m listening.
MA 10-12 lbs. system weight
Northern Lites BC Rescue snowshoes 2.8125 lbs. pair
With a solid board secured horizontal-carry next to the back and a pair of northern lites, I can do the truffle shuffle on the up and chase bunny rabbits too. Plus carry my Weber charcoal grill in case I ever catch one of them furry buggers.
ive got some approach skis for mountaineering, but guesswhat? theyre real skis…and theyve got voile plates for bindings. they weigh 5 pounds for the pair…
mtn approach uses the “grenade gloves” strategy, get as many DOPE boarders on your team as possible and the kids will start to think its the coolest shit ever.
Too much weight for me SPLITTIPPIN. I’m all concentrates in the Bc now Lighter. Less to carry No fire hazard
^^this!^^
Micro G pen has revolutionized my skin track aura. :doobie:
Concentrates are the jam diggity doo! I prefer…waaay more controllable, and easier to hit that bastard all day. Open Vape is my jam….TEX bring that action to the Splitboard fest vato….
Jeffe…we’ll have to check Micro G if I make it up to OR split fest.
Oh yeah this thread is about planky things on your back vs. vapy things in your MiiiiiiiiND :doobie:
I know a dude who still insists approach skis’s are the shit. He’s a much better snowboarder and freerider than I am, so I’ll give him the benefit of doubt. They even build their own balsa core ski’s, I believe with no ptex just skins epoxied directly onto the fiberglass. I think you could make this light enough to work, but as a splitboarder I don’t really see the point. I’ve never actually seen him use them, I guess if you don’t use them they are perfect.
Also invited him to our splitfest last year, because i’m not ashamed to be seen with a skier in general. But he couldn’t make it.
IMO if you build a super lightweight ski yourself from some old skins and wood and mount Sparks on it, why not. But buying the full MA set is dumb, because for that kind of moneys you can get a nice splitboard setup.
I know this thread is old. I actually just got the whole system off of eBay for $250, Skis + Backpack. I do splitboard, but this system has sparked my interest.
I do believe it has some basic mistakes in its concept:
– hinges should fold in opposite direction, that way the locking mech does not bear all the load (I had a plan and some parts for a DIY system, but never got around to that) – it should be Voile / Spark compatible (mod that I’m going to make) why drag 2 bindings to the mountain – could be lighter
The part I hate the most while transitioning is the removal and packaging of the skins, getting the cheat sheets attached etc. That is where I believe the transition can and will be faster, not the assembly and dis assembly of the splitboard.
For the price I paid I think its worth trying out, maybe I will like my split better, we’ll see.
I was testing out my hard boot setup the other day at Brighton and the ridiculousness of my situation made me think of this thread. Not the fact that I was hard bootin’ it, but because I don’t have Dynafit toepieces yet, I skinned up on skis, strapped them to my back and rode down on a splitboard. If it wasn’t 9:30pm, pitch black, and snowing hard I’m sure I would have gotten some looks. Gomer of the year award.
