December 28, 2011 at 4:48 pm #647344 802smuggler 369 PostsI had some personal matters I had to deal with the past 8 months. I had just been given a fly rod from an old timer I work with too. But I didn’t get the chance to use it. This man has been fishing the winooski for decades but he’s hard to get out on the water. I’d really like to find someone to fish with that knows some about the sport! December 28, 2011 at 7:34 pm #647345 vtbackcountry 440 Poststhere’s that NW wind…the rain turned over to snow around noon today and temps are dropping fast, I-89 is now closed and the snow is coming down hard but sideways. should get a few inches this afternoon/eve before things mellow and the storm pulls out. sun with single digits tomorrow for highs on the hill.hoping for some bigger storms come the new year, be safe everyone December 29, 2011 at 5:14 am #647346 vtbackcountry 440 Postsstorm totals today are coming in well over a foot along spine of the central greens from the breadloaf north thru mansfield region, with 8-10″ easy. still, very strong NW winds were blowing things around a bunch, so expect to see variations.will post again tomorrow after heading up the hill in the AM December 29, 2011 at 4:54 pm #647347 vtbackcountry 440 Postsgood news, we look to be moving into a more active weather pattern starting Fri with a series of upper level troughs moving thru our area into mid-week, helping us build that base. temps will remain cold thru early next week. this larger shift is very encouraging.it’s super cold but bluebird this am, mansfield stake now showing 20″. slept in today.seems at least we’re moving in the right direction weatherwise, talk again soon December 29, 2011 at 5:04 pm #647348 vtbackcountry 440 Posts @802smuggler wrote:Northern Vermont 11/23/11. Happy Turkey Day!Could not have asked for better snow!sweet shot, glad you got some. that was a creamy day December 30, 2011 at 3:25 am #647349 802smuggler 369 PostsHeaded up to Smuggs to poach a lap this morning before work. It was bitter and windy, but the skies were clear. Hopefully the boat load of sunshine today worked the base. As far as riding the new snow, it all blew into the trees last night and it was just to sketch to ride in my opinion. So I bombed a groomer, plus a couple nice pow turns. It was fun packing back to the car while everyone else was still working on coffee.Awesome sunrise up at smuggs. We got the big ‘R’ in Bolton and temps are dropping to lock the surface up tight. Hopefully we can get into a (cold) storm track and lay some surface down. My skins are gathering dust 🙁 🙁 January 3, 2012 at 7:23 pm #647354 grubbers 150 PostsGot some good turns in this morning at Smugg’s before work. Probably around 5″ in the non-wind-affected areas. Felt good to finally get out on the split this morning. January 4, 2012 at 5:25 am #647355 802smuggler 369 PostsNow that the holidays are over my girlfriend has given me the green light to start looking for splits. Just wondering what you all in Vermont are riding. I’d like to be able to really enjoy the deep when and if the snow gets here! But also not be so pow specific that it makes spring riding tricky. Also scouting what the lady friends are riding. Thanks in advance! January 4, 2012 at 8:25 pm #647357 vtbackcountry 440 Postson a 62 S series now w/ Voile hardware & CO2s after a decade+ on 66 & 73 split decisions out west. they were great powder boards, especially in the Wasatch and super deep. a little soft and thin feeling back here. the S series seems a touch more solid/thicker and a bit stiffer in the tail and torsion in comparison, but is again a cambered deck. a VERY nice ride for the east b/c, a bit more responsive it seems in variable conditions. i’m liking that. i’m 6’3, 180, all mtn freerider.would love to add a rocker board to the quiver, but not in the cards right now. we still have a couple extra setups kickin around for friends or newbies. my lady is now sporting last years mojo 54 which she LOVES after coming off a 59 split decision out west. shorter and way easier to turn in the trees here w/ some taper. 5’9, 130, faster all mtn riderhoping to demo other brands like prior, rome, etc soon. January 4, 2012 at 9:29 pm #647358 802smuggler 369 PostsThanks. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback for the women on voile 154’s. The venture lineup looks great but I’m not sure they really cater to Vermont conditions. The freebird also sounds pretty cool. Light and tight with rocker and camber. Think I’m leaning that way right at the moment. Will research prior a bit more. January 5, 2012 at 1:49 am #647359 vtbackcountry 440 Postsfyi, twostowe rode the freebird here all last season… maybe you can pm him for his opinion January 5, 2012 at 2:07 pm #647360 BigJay 342 Posts @802smuggler wrote:Thanks. The Prior is more playful in deep snow… feels just like the Burton Malolo and Fish combo: Doesn’t sink, super tight radius and still can carve. The Prior is by far the best splitty i’ve own (Burton w/ their system, Voile Mojo and Prior Khyber). One thing for sure, get some Sparks Bindings: They’re awsome and you’ll never go back to the Voile plates setup!
