This stupid viral thing I got is killing me. Sorry I missed out on the touring this past weekend… 🙁 I doubt I’ll be able to swing anything before I leave Boston, cause I’m wrapping up my last days of work, but maybe… maybe…
killer weekend behind us, some good inches tonight, and a big nor’easter in the forcast for sunday.
Yep! Again, major snow seems to be coming up for Sun-Mon… A sick day is again already planned!
This w-e i’ll be riding the slopes of Jay… There’s a meeting at 4h30 in the stateside cafeteria regarding the fence that’s being put on the ridge from Jay Peak to Big Jay. After the gash that’s been put on the mountain. We’ll still be able to access Big Jay but by skinning instead of walking the ridge.
During the holiday, i’ll be up there for 2 weeks… So if you want to go for a tour, contact me via E-MAIL…. I won’t check this board as i don’t have much of an internet connection up there… but still can manage e-mails…
I lurked last years thread and found it very helpful! 🙂
On the bright side, a Stowe local just emailed me and said we might be talking about a significant storm over the weekend. I plan to get the split tuned and ready and head up Monday evening for some fun on Tue and Wed.
oh avy 1 is totally legit now that there is a perfect avi path down big jay. im heading out there early sat morn. follow my tracks theyll lead you staight to hell.
things are pretty rad. we’ve been getting 6 inches here and there overnight. i went around the NEK both before and after work and had an awesome day. the snow is consolidating a bit in the NEK, but most stuff around here hasn’t been touched, the beauty of the NEK. my day today went like this:
had to work the old 1-7 shift at the shop today so i got up early and earned some serious solo turns. found some no joke goods around pisgah. had a few scary moments when i decided to drop in between two of the ice climbing routes there, thinking that for some reason there wouldn’t be ice under the snow. so there wasn’t enough snow and i uncovered a nice alpine climbing route. kinda not so cool at first, but finagled my way to the bottom and the run out was way legit. Also set a nice skin track up behind the Abuchon and practiced my powder 8s by the light of the parking lot. not a bad day for a work day.
there is still plenty to be had around here, as long as this rain event isn’t of great significance. I’ll be making my rounds before my 10am shift at the shop sunday. gonna be an early morning.
Last couples of weeks were crazy up at Jay… After a bit of rain, snow piled up continuously at Jay almost everyday! I don’t remember a xmas holiday that generous in snow for years!
I went out twice with the splitboard… First time it was about -20F or something… crazy cold… We went out to explore Little Jay in search of new lines and new ideas… We found some great open woods and really steep side of a mountain… I recorded most of it on the GPS… so it will be easier the next time… The battery died on me… Maybe because it was Fr*****in cold!
The next day, we went out on Big Jay. It was a lot warmer and the snow was way lighter then the previous day. Still, riding 4ft of fresh untouched snow always is a good thing…. We did the last section of the Jailhouse Chute… Pretty impressive stuff… But definately not needed! Be careful, trees were just piled up on the ground…. You can get you skis caught up in them…
Today is the first day of RAIN for most of the east coast with above average weather… 60F in some areas… Ouch! We’ll loose a lot of snow… but in 2 weeks, things should be back to normal… I guess we needed a break to recharge our batteries! Heck, i’ll get my bike out and go for a ride on frozen snowshoe trails, there always fun!
skinned up to tuckermans bare chested today and saw a 6ft crown across the entire bowl below the headwall rock/ice. pretty rad to see and a good reminder that the shit can rip. being 62 degree by noon today the sherburne was a bit sticky, but it was most def the best coverage ive ever see on it.
I just blew off plans to head up to nVT about 10 minutes ago. I may leave tomorrow or Sunday and try and time the storm that may be coming (please lord…). Then hope for some powder on Mon and Tue. I’d pray (or piss on a spark plug) if I thought it’d do some good.
Every year this Jan Thaw just burns my ass. Its downright gloomy over at AlpineZone.com
Alright, here’s an update on what’s going on in the Northern Greens!
In the last week, a few snow events took place. Reports from different area between Jay and Stowe talk about 24in of snow in the last week or so. Temps have been cold so the snow is still fresh in most places. Hopefully, we’ll catch a few flakes here and there to improve the quality of the base. There isn’t much to work on but everything that is there is rock solide from the meltdown from 2 weeks ago.
We’re going out somewhere around Jay on Saturday… I’ll try and post a report with pics if it’s not too cold… I haven’t made a single report this season to encourage the east coast scene… We need our fix too!
hit up a tour on big jay yesterday. deep, light, and big cliffs was the name of the game. nice solid base underneath makes for some difficult skinning up from the bottom, but well worth the effort.
