Got a email from Mt. Rose today saying that will tow any car with a dog in it and revoke skiing priviledges. I replied asking for a refund on my pass, since this ridiculous policy was not in place last September when I purchased it. My dog goes with me almost everywhere I go this time of year, and I would have gotten a pass from someplace else or not gotten one if I’d known this.

Please Leave The Pooches at Home:
Mt. Rose is currently experiencing an excess of problems with people bringing their dogs to the ski area.
Issues include:
• Dogs left in vehicles without the windows cracked.
• Barking / vicious dogs in the backs of pick-ups.
• Loose dogs running around the parking lots and dangerously near the highway entrance.
• Unleashed dogs on the deck scrounging food or barking at kids.
• Dog poop around the lodge.
• And non-pet owners complaining.
Starting immediately, any vehicle that has an animal left in it will be towed to the Animal Control office and skiing privileges for the owner will be revoked. This may be over the top, but we have signs in place, have sent e-mails, and have posted flashing electronic messages yet still the requests are all ignored.
You may be more responsible w/ your pet but we still ask that you leave the fury ones at home.

February 23, 2006 at 1:30 am #586923SanFrantasticoParticipantThat’s lame. Someone at Mt. Rose just has a bug up their ass for some reason. I’ve never been to that resort, but in my many resort experiences I’ve never noticed any problems with dogs going crazy in the parking lots or harrassing people or pooping the place up.
My guess is that some little person made up the rule and is getting really mad because no one is following it. Hey little person: your first hint that your policy is over the top is when you say ‘this may be over the top…’
My little sister keeps her dog (my dog-niece) in the car whenever she goes up to Tahoe out of necessity. She can’t really leave a 60 lb. dog cooped up in a hotel room all day when she is visiting for the weekend. Everyone is happier when she’s snoozleing in her pile of blankets in the back of the car. I guess we’ll never be going to Mt. Rose, which is too bad because I was hoping to visit this year.

February 23, 2006 at 5:04 am #586926powpowhunterParticipantThere’s no dogs allowed up the cottonwood cayons (at least little for sure) to protect the S.L.C. watershed. I have forgotten about this before, and definately felt like a criminal (perhaps rightfully so) when hiding a puppy inside the car for an hour or two. They let the resort avy dogs up there, and maybe assistance dogs too. My question however is this, do all the skiers taking shits and pisses in the woods constitute more of a health hazard to the water supply than a couple of canines? You bet they do. No wading in a nice mountain stream? Yeah right. Clearcut a hillside for a ski run, drive choppers and thousands of cars, but yer kids cant wade in the stream, and yer dog can’t hike with you? I don’t know the science behind all this, but the logic sure does seem warped.

I’m not a dog owner so sorry if my misunderstanding offends anyone but how is it that leaving your dog cooped up in a vehicle all day is better than leaving it in a hotel or at home? It seems like a 60 lb dog would have way more room to stretch his legs inside a room compared to the back of a car. I prefer sleeping in a room anyday.
Sure people love their dogs but sometimes it’s almost like the dog in the back of a truck or in the car is more of a status symbol than a companion.
This is exactly the reason I don’t own a dog. I wouldn’t feel right dragging it around with me everywhere I go only to leave it sit in my car all day. Nor do I feel like burdening my friends or paying bording fees for someone to watch it when I go away for a long time.

1. She feels really comfy and at home in the car with all her blankets and toys and she doesn’t like to be left behind all day.
2. In a hotel room my sister would have to worry about the dog getting bored and chewing something up or barking until hotel security gets called.
3. My sister can check in on her periodically during the day to take for short walks and make sure she is comfortable.
4. She doesn’t have to leave the dog alone for as long a time in an unfamiliar environment.
Her dog is fabulously beautiful, but most people don’t consider mixed breed dogs to be a status symbol.
If Mt. Rose has a problem with unsupervised dogs running wild in their parking lots and begging for food outside the lodge, then they should call animal care and control to pick up those dogs which makes total sense.
If Mt. Rose is concerned for the safety of a dog in a car with the windows uncracked, then they should call animal care and control.
I’m not sure how it serves any purposes (other than giving smug satisfaction to some butthole bureaucrat) to tow a car that has a dog happily sleeping in the back of it.
Can you imagine coming back after skiing all day to find your car, stuff & dog missing with you & your family trapped at a resort at the end of the day in your ski gear? If it happened to me there would big trouble.

I’m sure in the summer, horses and riders are just fine. here in WA, a hick fat-ass can ride a horse just about anywhere, horses crap on the trails, piss in the streams, and promote more erosion than one thousand mountain bikes ever could.
but take a dog into the backcountry…
maybe get a white snow-suit for the dog for a little backcountry snow cammo?
it makes ZERO sense.
February 23, 2006 at 4:29 pm #586930knucklesplitterParticipantYeah, my dog Brodie the mutt is a status symbol, just like my dope ride – the ’86 Toyota Tercel Wagon he rides in. Bling bling, yo! 🙄
It is obvious to anybody that knows Brodie that he would rather ride with me and sit in the car for a couple hours than stay at home. Especially when he gets to play in the snow, usually with other happy dogs, at the beginning and end of the day. If I’m at the resort more than about 2 hours I take a break and go check on him and let hime out. Often I go to Rose for about two hours and then he and I head into the BC or go do something else fun. There are many formerly-loyal Mt.Rose regulars who used to do this. We all park in about the same place and our dogs would play together supervised towards the back of the parking lot.
It is not like dogs were running all over the place unattended, and I have never seen a dog on the deck or dog poop near the lodge. I have seen people shitting in the woods and I saw a guy puke on the deck once.
This whole thing if fucking absurd.
Next pow day I am going to park at the meadows and Brodie and I will skin up and drop in East Bowl together at 8:29am. Maybe *I*’ll take a big dump next to the old lodge at the bottom.

No. The GM said he’d “prorate it”, which means I’d get next to nothing back. I told him that was unacceptable and he basically indicated that was just too bad. Keep in mind the pass only cost $299, and we’re more than halfway through their normal season. I really didn’t think I would get a refund, but I wanted to to be among the many who will be giving these assholes a bunch of shit over the next week or so. And wait until they tow a few cars.
I have been saying for a few years that I will eventually be backcountry only (besides a few inbounds days) when things get too out of hand at the resorts with crowds, cost, and attitude. This crap puts me right at the edge much earlier than I expected.

Rose and you know the best thing about that place is that is was a laid back, family oriented, anything goes local scene. Sorry to see that it has been taken over by a bunch of napoleonic coorporate whiners (who have probably never skiied a day in their life).

I now refer to it as Mt.Blows, and not just because of the wind. More crowded, more attitude, more rules, more gapers, and the pow now only lasts a couple of hours instead of all day like in 2000.
