I’m kinda in gimp mode, so took it easy. Did a quick tour circumnavigating Diamond Peak at Lassen.Found stable snow. Pretty much spring-like conditions. But you don’t have to wake up too early. Low sun angle and cold.Pilot Pinnacle Mt. Diller Lassen We took off from the parking lot around 10:30, skied up the road and dropped into the north facing shoulder of Diamond Peak around 1pm.Even though it was north facing, the snow was really good. I imagine the ridges coming down from Ridge Lakes, being south facing, would have been pure butter. But we found excellent snow on our north facing terrain.Might be some fresh snow this next weekend.Got more pics and a video is loading… http://www.backcountrytalk.earnyourturns.com/vb/showthread.php?1642-Lassen-Diamond-Peak-Jan-3-2015 January 7, 2015 at 5:24 am #777277 Deebo 33 PostsNice! I was up at the Ridge Lakes area a few weeks ago and had a good time. Was hoping that I would have been able to get something in Mendocino NF by now, but I didn’t see much up there on my way to Lassen. Seems like maybe South Yolla Bolly could have something rideable on the north side, but I’m not even sure if the gate is closed or not on the road in. Might give it a try in the next few weekends for the heck of it and just camp and hike if there’s not enough snow. Definitely keeping my fingers crossed for more storms soon though! January 7, 2015 at 6:46 pm #777318 jibmaster 446 PostsIt looked like enough snow driving on the 5. Snow Mt., Black Butte, South Yolla Bolly, North Yolla Bolly and Black Rock Mt. looked pretty white.http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/imagery.php?op=fire&fireID=ca-north-000 Heading up there tomorrow for three days. Looks like Black Butte might have enough snow – drive right up to it. Not sure yet where we’re going… January 8, 2015 at 1:23 am #777349 powderjunkie 1669 Postsyou coast range diehards 🙂nice TR jib, glad to see you are healing upwe got one good day at lassen before Christmas just before that rain event. January 9, 2015 at 4:45 am #777499 Richard Bothwell 16 PostsHey JIbmaster, were you there on Saturday or Sunday? I was leading a snowshoe trip on Diamond on Sunday, and passed a snowboarder with snowshoes just below the summit….was that you?Do you ride in Lassen often? See you there!Richard Richard Bothwell Program Director, Guide AMGA SPI, WFR AIARE Level 1 and 2 Avalanche Educator & CFO (Chief Fun Officer) http://www.OutdoorAdventureClub.com Outdoor Adventure Club “Go ahead, check us out…you’re on the clock!” January 11, 2015 at 12:30 pm #777935 jibmaster 446 PostsWe were there both days, but only skied on Saturday. We both ski, not snowboard – thanx for letting me post here bcrider!Snow Mt. did not have enough snow. Only patches to the summits. But we did get some cool wildlife sightings. Got buzzed by a Bald Eagle about ten feet away and saw a California River Otter. He was the only one catching any fish. I caught nothing. He entertained us for about 30 minutes. Later that night, I broke a rib. Back to couch mode… 🙁I ski there at least once or twice a year, usually when the Coast Range is lacking snow. January 12, 2015 at 4:53 am #778014 Deebo 33 PostsThanks for the report Jibmaster! Hopefully this weekend the weather pattern will change and bring some precip with snow like they’re prediciting… Bummer about the rib? How’d you do that, slip on ice? Cool you saw some wildlife up there. I saw a couple of river otters at Lett’s Lake camping there last winter. Cool little guys. Guessing they had to be relocated there in recent years, since I hadn’t seen them there before and there’s not too many body’s of water nearby, unless maybe they came up from Stony Creek. Animals can do some amazing things at times though.I actually saw a family of river otters on the beach near Bodega Bay a couple months back. Pretty far from the nearest creek or river, but there was an estuary kind of nearby. One caught a pretty damn big fish out of the ocean. Anyway I was pretty amazed to see that and even see them there at all.Did you see the Bald Eagle at Lett’s Lake? That’s cool if you did. I’ve heard they are there sometimes and my GF and I are always hoping to see them, but have only seen Osprey there. I have seen golden eagles up at Snow Mountain near the summits almost every time I’m up there. Saw a Bald and Golden at South Yolla Bolly when I was camping at Square Lake a couple years back. Here’s a couple pics of those river otters at the coast: January 12, 2015 at 5:00 am #778015 Deebo 33 PostsRichard, like jibmaster I go to Lassen sometimes when the Coast Range isn’t providing. Maybe I’ll see you up there sometime. I’m actually hoping to take the AIARE Level 1 course through the Outdoor Adventure Club up there this winter if I can scrape enough funds together… January 12, 2015 at 5:18 am #778016 jibmaster 446 PostsThe Bald Eagle flew right over our heads at the lake, chattering http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bald_Eagle/sounds (the first sound) to it’s mate.I fell off my deck, the night before the trip. Fell backwards and landed on a railing. Just felt really sore, but we went anyways. Could hardly sleep the first night in the tent. Couldn’t roll over without sharp pain. Could barely lay down or get up from a prone position. Next day, hiked up Snow Mt. without much trouble – other than being out of shape in general. The second night in the tent, I rolled over-carefully- and heard/felt it snap. The sharp pain was now SUPER painful. Now, I really couldn’t get up. Any movement was sending me into shock. So I had snowblasta help get me up and I slept the rest of the night sitting up in the Jeep. January 16, 2015 at 4:48 pm #778368 Richard Bothwell 16 PostsHey Deebo, Jibmaster…and anyone else riding Lassen. Let me know when you’re going to be there. I’m usually guiding trips or teaching classes on weekends, but always happy to meet in the parking lot to say hi, and/or grab a beer together after riding.Deebo- do you have plans this weekend? We have one spot open in our AIARE 1 course (Sat, Sun, Mon). Let me know if you’re interested, and I can see about getting you a “bro deal” price for jumping in at the last minute.More snow, please!Richard Bothwell Program Director, Guide AMGA SPI, WFR AIARE Level 1 and 2 Avalanche Educator & CFO (Chief Fun Officer) http://www.OutdoorAdventureClub.com Outdoor Adventure Club “Go ahead, check us out…you’re on the clock!” January 19, 2015 at 8:27 am #778519 Deebo 33 PostsHey Richard, Sorry I just got your message, but couldn’t have made it this last weekend anyway.
