Chimera, may make the Dum Dum, which has been floating around in prototype form for a couple of seasons now, it has around 16-17 m radius. Prior and Donek will do semi custom boards with longer radii. With the right design, I am in favor of sidecut radii of 16 m and up, but most snowboard designers are quite conservative, and do not really get it. Thank goodness there is Daniel Furberg, and good for him to buck the silly trends… February 2, 2014 at 10:11 pm #674869 permnation 303 PostsBarrows, what happened to your quip about the Odin having a longer sidecut? February 2, 2014 at 11:06 pm #674871 permnation 303 Postshttp://siasnowshow.snowsports.org/supplierdashboard/upload/129/Venture_Catalog_2014.2015.pdfLooks like the Odin can be added to the list 16.4-18.1m depending on size. Oh wait that’s sidecut depth. With an edge length of 125 cm, and a sidecut depth of 1.7 cm, the calculated equivalent sidecut radius would be 12.3 meters, this is significantly longer sidecut radius than the Odin had previously. Thanks for posting the link to the 14/15 Venture specs. We actually wrapped up the R&D a while back and are still offering the DumDum this year. February 3, 2014 at 6:58 pm #674878 JimmyC 351 PostsThe availability of the Dum Dum is great news. Will you be updating your web page with the specs, description, photos of the Dum Dum in the near future?Ahh, I’m embarrassed to say I probably won’t get to the website any time soon (though we are slowly updating it with photos etc). We trickle these special edition shapes in small numbers so they’re usually sold before we build them. Anyone who is interested should definitely get in touch with me, and I will definitely try to keep the forum updated with this kind of thing.Jim, I know you’re down with Chimera! I’ll drop you a line and tell you everything I can think of.Sorry to derail the conversation. February 4, 2014 at 12:38 am #674880 JimmyC 351 PostsAwesome—-thanks!!!! Alpine snowboard racers; ever seen a race board with “Magnetraction”? OK, so why do we have “Magnetraction” at all, well, the answer is provided by the fact that most boards have way too deep a sidecut, where the edge of the board between the feet (where the rider actually has the most control over the edge pressure) is very hard to even engage with the snow: the “Magnetraction” points actually simulate a less deep sidecut, providing some edge purchase between the feet. My opinion is that “Magnetraction” is a crutch, which partially “solves” the problem caused by sidecuts which are too deep in the first place. Never Summer’s “Vario” solves this problem in a similar fashion, by making the sidecut between the feet an almost straight edge, making it easier to engage. Boards with really long radius sidecuts do not need these crutch type fixes, by their nature, long radius sidecuts distribute more edge pressure between the feet, improving edge grip, and the the rider’s control over edge grip. Most who have ridden furberg boards remark about how good the edge hold is, and David Capozzi is doing a bunch of quite extreme descents in the Alps of icy, super steep lines on a furberg. My wife and younger kid are at the resort today having a blast, I have to sit here on the internez lolCheers Ivo February 10, 2014 at 12:50 am #674885 barrows 1490 PostsActually, there is too much new snow here, and too much wind to ride today, I basically cancelled after dealing with near zero visibility, hammering wind, and setting off multiple 18″ to 30″ thick soft slabs yesterday. Looks like this storm is finally going to end tomorrow afternoon, then maybe it will be a little safer by Wednesday.iy Viewing 20 posts - 1 through 20 (of 20 total)You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
