“Have there been any reports this season of Karakoram parts breaking?”
My partner had a failure of his touring brackets, and another partner had some kind of other failure, which ended his day. The original heel lifters did not work, but my understanding is that they have been re-designed since then.
So far failure reports seem to be about normal for a new product, and Karakoram seems to have been pretty good about getting out replacements. Have they gotten crampons out yet?
I think they are going the right way with the superlight option-looking at how many stainless parts there are which could be titanium (almost half the weight of stainless at the same strength). I would probably purchase the clips for my board setup (hardboots) if they were titanium and equal or less weight than the Voile chinese clips.
That was looked at. A sheet of 6AL-4V sheet is about 4 grand. Yeah, that’s a lot of clips, but….
I still think it would be awesome though and it seems like the split community is one that would parallel the geekdom of the road bike crowd when it comes to disproportionate cost vs weight ratios. (Maybe we can purple ano parts too…) 🙂
No doubt 2011-2012 will be a good one for the twins.
FYI, heard from Karakoram by email, and they tell me a website revamp is in the works. Bindings are all sold out right now, but they have some hooks in stock.

Thanks. This is helpful.
One more question: Are the board hole patterns for Karakoram and Voile the same? That is, are the two systems interchangeable across boards?

Did they say when they’d have new complete set-ups available again? If not, I’ll ask and report back here.
Built my first split in 95, so I have been waiting Sixteen Years, for something better. Thanks boys, and congratulations on your successes. Also thanks to the community for being SO DAMN COOL! At other sights, everyone just snarls at eachother. Here, people just joke and share the love. Oh and you can enter to win Free Gear and Beer. Great sport, Great people. Word up, I am presently working as a ski boot fitter, and trust me, you can dial in ANY kind of flex you want out of a little 3 buckle AT boot. Its PLASTIC remember, not written in stone. You can grind it and trim it down until it is to your liking, and be EVEN LIGHTER in the process. Whatever, I am going to have to get on some of these just for how sweet the operation will be compared to the CONTRAPTION I’ve been dealing with. I am in the enviable position of having a Khyber 165 Carbon, with Dynafit 3tf’s (in walk-mode, & mostly unbuckled), and Voile Mountain plates. I run the back binding really loose, so I have enough KUNG Fu Action. Light is Right!
^^^ That just begs the question, could the brothers come up with a plate for hardbooters? Something super lightweight & compatible with the ride mode interface for that active clamping on the down and then just run directly mounted Dynafit toe pieces on the uptrack?

This would be sick, and I think the market is larger than you think (and growing)…
1) Use heel side “crescent moon” mount to locate a heel bail.
2) Use toe side ‘crescent moon” mount to locate a Dynafit style toe piece. They’re off patent now – move the lever from the front to the side – ala current soft boot Karakoram binding.
3) No more “plate”!! hardboot “binding” is just a heel bail and a Dynafit style toe piece with side lever action – light! low!
4) Uphill is (obviously) covered with the Dynafit toe – bonus points if the same one used for board mode is re-used here. No plates to put in your pack – heel bail stays put – Dynafit style toe does too – unless it’s used for uphill as well.
Hmmmmm, interesting ideas there Treepilot. Why not make a hardboot binding? Although everybody might just gaggle once the superlight is brought to mainstream!
This may be a stupid question but are these bindings offered in a large size that could handle a size 13 boot? I know they are sold out right now and/or wait-listing people, but they don’t even have a size option to select when you add to the cart on their online store. Also, does anyone know when they will become available again? Thanks.
Good question. I know there are “medium” and “larges” but not sure what size those actually fit. I believe there is a retailer delivery planned over the summer and a following one late summer. But, don’t quote me.
