Wow…well today was an amazing day on Togwotee Pass until I was skinning back to the car and ran into a large crew of bad apple hybrid snowboarders from Jackson poaching Wilderness (I ride a snowmobile and snowboard, so no hate in either category). It is the user’s responsibility to know Wilderness boundaries. Do any of you Jackson mags know these poachers? Guys like these ruin it for other snowmobilers and create a bad name by not knowing and then completely disregarding Wilderness boundaries after being told.

For a little history, Togwotee Pass is the mecca of snowmobiling and there are few places to escape them…except in the Wilderness miles away the highway. Most backcountry skiers and boarders who ride Togwotee are from Dubois, Lander, and Riverton. These folks do not have the immediate pleasure to access Grand Teton National Park. Our playground is Togwotee and we have to find Wilderness to enjoy quiet, untracked powder. These boundaries are sacred to local backcountry users.

So today, when I saw this large group poaching Wilderness, I was vocal in letting them know that they were breaking the law, could face a fine, and it is their responsibility to know the Wilderness boundaries as motorized users. I clearly explained and showed them where they needed to be riding so they wouldn’t be in Wilderness.

Instead of following directions as to where they needed to be to be legal, they continued to argue, said they asked the Ranger and I was wrong and could take it up “with a judge.” They proceeded to snowmobile and highmark above. The conversation became heated with a remaining few, and I let them know I was taking their pictures and calling the Ranger since they wouldn’t leave Wilderness and left their group. 100 yards down was a cross country skier standing there with a map, and one of the snowmobilers coming near us. We flagged him, showed him the map, and explained it again, but his group continued to poach.

Back at the car, I talked to the Ranger from Black Rock who spoke to them this morning and specifically told them to be careful of the Wilderness boundaries up there. He was hoping to catch them in the parking lot and requested these photos. Sad thing is that it didn’t have to come to all this. Not too funny poaching Wilderness:

You would think hearing that and then an angry lone splitboarder heatedly explaining it to them they would get it…they didn’t. All season people have been poaching this area. We will be helping the Bridger-Teton crew sign this area this summer in order to alleviate conflicts like today, but it is frustrating until then.

Asses come in all forms – it seems. Sad that it was one of us – kinda – well minimally, but…

I hope karma will catch up to those boys one of these days

lewmt-they weren’t one of us at all. No splitboards, many without any avalanche gear, and attitudes that would get most people punched in the face.

did the kid in da purple pants with duct tape have dreadlocks?

If so, he’s from Boulder, CO. Ran into him riding @ da village the previous weekend. Think his name is Jake.

On a side note, how is French Spy looking?

I would have grabbed each one of those dicks and knocked their dicks in the dirt :duel: . All you would have seen is a lone split boarder and pile of assholes! THIS is why I hate sleds!

The kid in the purple pants does have dreadlocks…I heard over in another forum that his name is Nate and he is a douche. I heard he was acting a fool up a Baker recently as well. Believe me I wanted to dole out a “Cowboy Education,” but one against 15 usually doesn’t fair too well. They clearly could see and hear that I was loosing my shit. Just hope the Ranger gave it to them without Vaseline.

French Spy is sick. Keep posted for the “positive” trip report.

Cool, man. Props to you for speaking up to them. I like to ride a sled to, but even a couple of sleds can impact such a huge area.

Man, I’m so sorry to hear about this. I’ve ran into assholes riding their sleds all the way to the summit plateau on Baker… Jesus Christ that pisses me off.. No beef to sled users (I would love to have one for long logging road approaches to climbs/tours) but destroying the wilderness for the sake of high marking is so offensive. They should be fined, and if they get caught again have their sleds confiscated.

Is the poop stain with the dreads riding a Jones?

Way to stand up to a bunch of punks, that takes guts out in the middle of nowhere. It’s also good to hear that you’re going to follow through and help get the wilderness area posted better so that shit like this won’t happen as often.

Man if I had a dollar for everytime I’ve seen this. Wouldn’t it be great if every state required LARGE license plates for all snomobiles. That would help things out I’d bet.

Good for you for speaking up. I know how it feels to have a bunch of entitled douches piss you off. I have been involved at our our local skatepark and let me tell you…douchebag city. Thats another story though…anyway karma will catch them. I personally cant stand white kids with dreads..its just worng..Rastas originally grew dreads to show their dread appearance from the oppression they were facing. I seriously doubt that dipshit in the purple rain pants is oppressed in anyway. Just because someone pulls tubes and listens to reggae doesnt make him a rastafarian. His favorite Bob Marley album is probably “Legend”…so there you have it. His real karma is being himself. People like this are everywhere..it would be nice to whip their ass. Then you just stoop to their level though. Somewhere in the future the universe will catch up with this group and handle them. It still is frustrating I know..so just stay positive. I dont even know you but I would have your back for sure..if I were you I would sleep easy knowing that your integrity is intact..

Props to you Wyomingsplit_ride! :headbang: If more (insert favorite mode of recreation) users had your sensibility, we’d all probably get a long a lot better. It’s people like those you encountered that not only ruin it for their peers, but also cause conflicts with other users. I grew up with dirt bikes, 4x-ing and jet skiing, but have given up all of them due to a-holes like those guys.
Thanks for being a stand up guy and example for others.

Man this infuriates me, there is just no reason to be that much of an ass.

Being a sled-accessed b/c splitter this really bothers me. It’s dickheads like this that make the rest of us using sleds for access look bad. I respect the wilderness boundary, and anybody around not using sleds. To me it’s a tool, and a pretty necessary one for riding in Central Oregon if you want to get away from the masses.

Good job keeping it together, i have a great deal of respect for you.

I disagree with this approach. The thing is, is that most of our wilderness has been destroyed already, and so it is our duty to preserve as much as we can not only for ourselves but also for the next generation. If we just sit back and let karma take care of these assholes, my gut feeling is that they will simply continue to get away with environmental murder. I agree that resorting to violence is not the answer, but we need to do as much as we can to get them fined and their sleds confiscated.

……..Okay well maybe someone should figure out where this white trash lives, and when he’s sleeping set fire to his sled. Except that would just be polluting… Dammit!

I’ve heard that slamming a 5lb sledge hammer down on the head of a large two stroke engine will effectively destroy it. I wouldn’t know from experience though . That’s a pretty green solution too.

Hey wysplit, good on you for trying to talk some sense into those guys. Some people just don’t get it. Good luck tracking them down, maybe something good will come of it. Even just outing them on this internet forum is better than nothing.

The dirty Boulder hippy rockin’ that tea baggin’ dickbroom on his lips, and the greasy shit wig has a face that looks like it’s plowed many mans arses. :shit:

    I agree with Bonez… It’s hammer time!!

In an instant such as this. You almost need take a picture of them in the act, and snap a shot of them loading the sleds on the trailer with license plate #’s. It’s up to the ranger to rip them a new one from there.

Karma may get em’, but a ticket and fine goes a long ways with dirt bags such as this.
