    There is a ton of stoke on this site for the Dynafit TLT5. I don’t want to take anything away from that boot or even dog on it but I am curious what boots people are using other than the TLT5 and why you choose that boot. If you feel it’s necessary to defend the TLT5 as the best boot to use, tell me why!

    I plan to ride my Scarpa Spirit 4s – because I already have them. Don’t want to buy new boots right now, so this is my best current option.

    I am removing two of the 4 buckles (really easy on the Spirit 4s), the rear spoiler and the power strap. I don’t even want to shave the cuff, in case I want to ski them in the future again – but I guess I will, if I find that they are OK for skinning up but the ride down sucks.

    I went to the hard side just after Christmas last year and finished out the season in BD Primes that I picked up on clearance. I went with those because they fit my foot so well. I just picked up a set of used TLT5s that will be much better boots for splitboarding but getting them to fit my feet is going to be a big challenge. I’ve set up a time to meet with a boot fitter at the end of the week, hopefully he’ll be able to do what I need him to do.

    With the Primes I removed the power strap and slotted the forward lean lock bar. I also cut some material off the back of the cuff but that’s a typical AT mod, not snowboard specific. They are stiffer than I’d like and it’s most noticable in the heel pocket but I can still ride pretty well in them. I’ll replace the lean lock bar and turn them back into ski boots.

    Ive done a few seasons on hards

    First and my favs are Scarpa Spirit 3

    Then the Gamont Materlite until the walk mode failed. I have made cubes for the mech now but always in walk mode.
    Super light and very low volume. Very thin liner so make sure they fit!

    I’m going to try BD quadrants next year. quite large but similar to the Scarpa.

    TLT5 in Australia are $$$$$$$$

    If you’re going to try Black Diamond then I’d suggest the Prime instead of the Quadrant. The Prime is slightly lighter and a bit softer for no real disadvantage compared to the Quadrant. The extra buckle on the toe isn’t supposed to help much.

    I have ridden the Scarpa F1, F3, Dynafit TLT 4 pebax and the TLT 5 mountain. All boots had the standard splitboard modifications.

    The F1 had a difficult to modify walk/ride mode. The F3 was easier to modify but the flex was really inconsistent and they were quite stiff laterally.

    I removed 2 of the buckles on the TLT4s and notched the walk/ride bar for forward flex. They were the cheaper, softer plastic option and I really liked the consistent, forgiving flex. Compared to the TLT5s though, they were quite bulky and did not walk or skin as well.

    The TLT 5 mountain fits my feet very well, is very minimal, lightweight, has very good flex, and is very easy to modify. It is the best splitboard AT boot I have ridden to date. I assume it is not the only one that is really good. Some riders have had issues with fit, thought the new TLT6 might help with that.

    Modifying HB boots is a personal preference.

    A lot will depend on what boot you choose to ski/ride with.

    I ride stock Scarpa F1’s and the only “mod” I have done is to add an “Eliminator Custom Tongue” shim which has solved some boot fitting issues for me and also has soften forward-lean for me.

    So try to carpet test a pair of Eliminator Custom Tongues a your local ski shop. I purchased mine at Pomeroy Sports in Aspen, Colorado.

    The F1 boot is designed for AT / Rando-Racing so it will only will work well with my Völkl Snow Wolf AT Skis (113/76/100). But these boots will not drive today’s fat AT Ski.

    I say continue trying the “variations” without the modifications to you new boots; since your trying to use your new TLT-5 boots for both AT skiing and Splitboarding.

    I ride Bomber Sidewinder Bindings and these bindings flex lateral. I have not tried the Phantoms yet. But I ride stock Burton Race Plates on my solid board.

    Bottom-line is try before you buy or modify your hard boots.

    i hate to be ‘that guy’ but since i have encouraged the use of hard drugs, i should say that if you are going to smoke crack make sure you’re already stupid drunk, so you can avoid taking any responisbizzlety for the crack use.

    hard boots! i meant.
    for hard boots i should say myself i use them free ride style, modified for flex, wide stance, duck, etc and if you’re looking into hard boots from a soft past, for free ride, i’d caution not to consider just any hard boot.
    and i hate to pick on Adam here but having tried on every boot he pictured (in the shop only, not riding), i have to say i wouldn’t (didn’t) consider giving any of those boots a chance on snow, they’re all super stiff. you can mod em, sure (i’d be careful cutting into the garmont) but they all start from a way stiffer spot than other options.
    others that i tried in the shop, and discarded due to stiffness, include Scarpa F3s and Maestrales (orange), BD primes…
    i hear ya on boots that fit out of the box but with TF stock or aftermarket liners, and potential to have shells punched for fit, id say go with what will work and make it fit. most shells will last many years so there is some value in investing what it takes, to get what will make you happy long term.

    for free riding i’ve used:
    Koflach arctis vario, back in the day, good boot but fwd lean was weak
    Dachstein, back in the day, garbage
    Scarpa lasers, heavily chopped but still way too stiff n clunky
    dynafit zzero3’s, a bit clunky, not too bad for flex, but the walk/ski mech. is brutal
    tlt5s are great
    dynafit one’s offer more support and good flex too
    tlt6s are super, from the looks and feel… waiting to ride…

    if you want a boot to ride similar to a soft boot, go with the most flexible shell and have a plan for the modifications, buckles, fwd lead, flex….. before you drop the coin.

    if you want an alpine carving set up or if you want to ski and snowboard with the same boots then you’re into a completely different concept and i got nuthin for ya.

    I used some old Scarpa Lasers for a couple seasons. CHEAP! They got me into the idea of hardboots.

    Switched up to some Scarpa Matrix’s that I scored with Intuition moldable liners. Also cheap ($150, shipped, NEW!…). I took off the power strap and that’s it so far. Nice and light boots.

    These boots can be had cheap because they’re a couple years old, and flexy. Skiers are a fickle bunch, and they all want stiffer boots, so that’s good news for us splitboarders who WANT flexy AT ski boots.

    Look around for older boots that have 3 buckles. 3=generally more flexy, 4 or more will be stiffer any you’ll probably ride with the top barely buckled.

    La Sportiva has a lightweight boot that is probably worth checking out. I know a couple of people who ride pretty well in the Scarpa Rush.
    If I was really into experimenting, adding some kind of tongue, adding some real buckles, and building an all new forward lean mech from scratch, I would be tempted by the Scarpa Alien (cheaper non carbon version), but it would be an expensive experiment.
    Another experiment I would like to try is mating a TLT5 cuff to a Dynafit PDG shell, but this is another experiment which is unlikely to happen due to expense (and how well the TLT5/6 works with some easy mods).

    I’m really interested in trying trying La Sportiva sideral. Tried them on and they felt really good with out any mods. Not to mention their low weight. Curious if anyone has had any success with this boot? +1 to more pics of the 3 piece split!
