Obviously googles are a very personal, must fit your face decision… I’ve been using SPY googles for the past couple seasons, but they’re starting to break down, foam is coming off of foam, lenses getting scratched… I’m looking to purchase new googles, and really like the ANON REALM googles, and SMITH I/O googles, just wondering if anyone has experience with these…? Fog issues, etc?.. Or can recommend another particular model of a different brand, and why?

Also, what is the best thing to use to glue the outer most layer of foam that touches your face to the big piece of foam on your googles? I tried super glue,,, that DID NOT work…

I had some sweet Arnette’s I rocked for many years until the wheels finally feel off :nononno: ..absolutely loved them!

Rolled a few different pairs of Spy’s the following few seasons, although I was never really that stoked on them. I never felt like I had great periferal vision with the Spy’s and they seemed somewhat small for my large grill 😉

Currently using Oakley Crowbars I believe and love them. Comfortable, good feel, fit and periferal. Oakely of course offers about a jillion replacement lenses for just about any light condition, but they can be pretty spendy$$$

I too ride with the Oakley Crowbars. They are without a doubt the best goggle I’ve ever worn. I have the fire iridium lens, and so far I’ve rocked it from whiteouts to bluebird days and have been just fine.

The crowbars also vent extremely well; you’ll have to TRY to get these things to fog up, and when you do it dissipates quickly.

The fit is wonderful, peripherals are fantastic, and the build quality is superior.

So yeah, I like my crowbars.

Oakleys here, A-Frames and Crowbars are both good. Best lenses in the business. You can buy Oakleys on a custom basis from oakley.com to get exactly the model you want, and there are a lot of choices in lenses. Personally I like the high intensity persimmon, dark enough for sun protection on sunny days, with iridium to reduce glare, and they really brighten things up in flat light, in the trees, or in storm conditions.

Gotta be Smith. They make great goggles, invented the dual lenses that everyone uses now. They also have a kick ass warranty program.

I’ve got two year old prodigies, lots of choices for replacement lenses as well.

Smith Optics is the only way to go. Smith Goggles are made in the USA (not China), Clearfield UT and their corporate HQ is in SV Idaho (not So Cal). Oakley, Spy, Electric, Anon etc…all made in China.

Smith Phenom with sensor mirror lens!! Great for low vis. Scour ebay and you`ll find lots of great deals on last year models. I picked my up for $75.

    Zeal Detonator SPPX:
    – peripheral vision
    – polarized (some people don’t because it’s harder to see where the ice patches are but I prefer polarized as it’s easier on my eyes overall)
    – photochromic lens changes tint to match conditions (no need to swap lens)
    – good anti-fog: double lens, venting, etc.

This year’s Eclipse SPPX looks like a winner too. I am all for NA-made, but until Smith has good spherical polarized and photochromic options I am sticking to Zeal.

i generally rock some anon realms and couldn’t be happier with them. fogging is generally only an issue if i’m wearing them while hiking, which is an issue that any goggle will have. the optics seem pretty good and the field of vision is nice and wide.

i was thinking about going with smith for my next pair of goggles, but i used some smith phenoms today and was not impressed at all. they seemed to fog quite easily.

How light do they turn in darker conditions? How noticeable is the polarization in sunny conditions? Does it help in flat light? Polarized is a must for me for shades, and it makes sense that it would be great for gogs as well.

    re: Zeal question

Where are you? – if close to Bellevue / Seattle you can check mine in person on the hill

From the official description: “Photochromic technology allows the lens to change from dark to light depending on available light, offering 13 – 43% visible light transmission”

They are light enough for me to do white-outs and night riding. Last year they were easy on my eyes in the bright April-May sun. (After this, I usually use polarized Maui Jim Navigators). The Zeals don’t get as dark as a mirror lens, definitely not a mountaineering grade protection.

Some people (bikers and skiers mostly, afaik) claim the polarized tech reduces glare (= true) so much, that you can’t tell the ice and road slicks, which they claim is more dangerous – because if you could see the high glare, then you can plan / avoid them better. I’ve heard people swearing not to use polarized ever after serious wipe-outs.

    Cheers

I have the SMITH I/O’s and I love em, super easy to change lenses on the fly if conditions change (or if one lens fogs up)

    comfy, too

Electric EG1S, excellent peripheral and super comfortable….great compatibility with helmets too. Definitely try them on though first, they’re big. Never an issue with fog and lenses are quite a bit cheaper than competitors.

By the way, highly recommend prolens.com for replacement lenses, great selection and prices for goggles that don’t advertise replacement lenses.

I have a pair of oakley crowbars with the amber polarized lens and i gotta say they are amazing! I haven’t had them fog up yet (even while hiking) and the peripherals are great. You really can’t go wrong with these but they can be a little pricey depending on the lens of your choice….keep an eye out on ebay for some great deals.

I’ve got these, too. My only complaint is that they are a little small for a larger face, but doable.

Try S4 optics. My friend is a rep so the fact that I don’t pay for them helps but I am impressed at the quality.

I have custom Oakley Splice – it took them 3 orders to get it right including once spelling my name wrong, but I do like them. What I like even better is the Rx insert with full field view instead of wearing glasses under which I got from http://www.heavyglare.com I had a close call with some temples on my glasses breaking upon a fall, which could have severely scratched my eye. Fortunately, it just scratched my skin. I am very happy with the whole package now.

    I highly recommend heavyglare.com

Love my Smith Prodigy’s! Got 2 pair, one sunny and one for cloudy. Sensor mirror rules in low light. I don’t care to change out lenses, so I bring both; a second pair of goggles also helps with fogging or accidental faceplant issues! :twocents:
