Forums The Gear Room New G3 Alpinist Skins – Size S or L? Viewing 5 posts - 1 through 5 (of 5 total)Author Posts October 23, 2015 at 12:25 am #784744 mhoc 5 PostsHi,I’m (almost) decided on getting the G3 Alpinist skins. The new model comes only in size S (147-163 cm) or L (162-178) and my splitboard is 163 cm, so right in the middle of both lengths. Which size will fit better? Also, are these skins okay for someone who’s a complete beginner when it comes to skinning? I’ve read a lot abot the alpinist/high traction dilemma and I’m a little more convinced on the alpinist and using crampons when needed. But any new input is appreciated. I’d use that to decide which way to go with the skins.I’m currently on Jones branded skins (Pomoco I think?) and had BD Ascents before that. My fiance has G3s and likes the plush but has had lots of trouble with the glue. If I were going to buy another set of skins right now it would be another set of Ascents or Climbing Skins Direct skins because they’re less expensive. I’ll just have to decide and go with one or the other, it’s the only way:-) October 26, 2015 at 9:50 am #784895 Jason4 443 PostsIf your choices are only the Voiles or the G3s I’d pick the Voiles with a tail strap. These in a large. February 15, 2016 at 6:52 am #789416 mhoc 5 PostsJust an update if anyone might be interested:First I ordered the size S Alpinists. Apart from not really covering the whole board (but being lighter and more compact), they didn’t really fit the Landlord well. The tailstrap was on the second hole, so almost the longest possible setting. The skin was streched quite hard this way and not very easy to install – had to pull the tail strap really hard. If I went with the last hole (longest setting), the tail clip was wobbly and not really in place. So I replaced the S with the L. The L was a bit better, but the opposite problem – had to use the last hole on the strap. If the skins would stretch a little over time, I’d need to punch another hole in the strap. The tail strap was really long when installed, which probably isn’t a big problem, but it bothered me.So I finally tried the Voile w/ tail clips, in size L. These fit fine, the tail strap is much shorter so it sticks out at the back just a little. I don’t have any prior experience with skins, but these work fine. I first tried them on a night ascent at a ski resort with frosty groomed snow and they gripped nicely, on some steeper points I even slipped a little. There aren’t any problems on powder. So I’m happy I didn’t go with the less grippy Alpinists. Thanks for all the advice.
