As I mentioned in the Avalanche section, I spent last weekend digging pits, beacon rescue, etc. As some point during the weekend (I’ve narrowed it down to Sat.) I managed to fuck up my left pinkie finger. I’m thinking it’s frostbite but not sure (I don’t remember lighting it on fire anyways). The outside of the finger is extremely chapped and tingly. Not completely numb but definitely not right. I’m hoping the chapped skin will shed and a perfect finger will emerge–although I’m doubtful. Anybody have any insight? Should I go to the doctor?

If there’s any question at all why hesitate to go to a doctor, unless you don’t have health insurance. You’d be pissed if that finger fell off because you put off seeing a doc, wouldn’t you?

Although I’m confident my finger isn’t going to fall off — you 100% right.

I’m going to make an appointment to see a doctor tomorrow.

Good choice. It’s probably nothing but it would suck to be wrong. I had a friend once who almost lost his hand because he didn’t think he needed to go to the doctor. It was a more extreme situation but he came whithin hours of being an amputee.

Its frostnip. Not Quite frostbite as you only froze the top layers . Frostbite is deeper freezing, and when it thaws you will in a hell of a lot of pain. Same thing happened to me at June Mt. when I took my avy 2 class. Now I have learned NEVER take your gloves off. Plus the guy who was teaching the class was anal about keeping your gloves on when doing pits . Now we both know why

Yeah, frostbite will turn black (bruised) and scab over eventually, and it hurts a lot once the rest of the nerves warm up and start working again.

And you know the old saying: “Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger” ?
Well that doesn’t really apply here. Even with frostnip, the affected areas become more susceptible to the cold, and you are more likely to get frost nip/bite in those areas again.

I’ve been thinking about it long and hard and can’t think of many uses for a dead finger. It would be great for stirring coffee but I drink mine black. 😕 I’m thinking stiff is better than dead in the sack. 😯 As I’ve now learned, typing is a lot easier with a live pinky also. 😡

    Keep dem gloves on!

Now you tell me. Definetly need to buy some touring gloves. I was constantly switching between my gloves w/ no fingers and my hot as hell mits (which I can’t do the split conversion or other detail work in). Saturday I was needed to get in my pack, convert the shovel, use beacon, dig pits, etc. etc. so my mits were basically useless…and Saturday also happended to be the day that the air temp was -6c and snowed all day long.

eh, just cut it off. You can use it to point “over yonder” or perhaps,

If you lost your swivel pin you can use the stiff dead finger to keep your board together! 😆

If I ever loose a finger I hope its my right thumb. That way when people ask” Hows it going?” I can just give them the thumbs up, only with no thumb

It’d be great for party tricks, like sticking it in flames and wacking it with hard objects (like Adam Sandler’s frostbit foot in Mr. Deeds).

Seriously though, hope it feels better soon. On knarly weather days (cold and windy like this last Monday) the exposed parts of my face will sometimes get funky dead spots where it got too cold (frostnip apparantly?). Eventually it sloughs off but in the meantime it makes me look core 😈

There’s really nothing they can do unless it gets infected. It sounds like yours is very minor. Be careful with it and don’t do that again.

I got pretty bad frostbite in Feb 04.

It got infected a week later and I had to spend a night in the hospital.

They told me I’d likely loose a good portion of this finger.

But it totally healed. Now it just gets cold a little easy.
    17 days later:

My fingers were supersensitive the next summer. Made rock climbing hurt. Other than that it was just a pain in the ass.

Yes, mine was very minor compared to yours. Looks pretty painful. Way to get through that, man. And your still riding…
