    Hello.

I’ve picked up Mammut Barryvox pulse beacon recently. It was on sale for a good price. It’s new old stock, not many people buying avy stuff here in Chicago. It runs latest firmware so I’m good here.
I was wondering if I need to test it in avy center and get a report or not ? I’m pretty sure I can get basic beacon check whenever I get to bigger mountains (CO, or UT), but I was thinking about full diag and necessary updates. =I don’t know what can get wrong with it from laying on a shelf, but who knows.

    Hey TLN,
I don’t think you need to worry about a new modern beacon becoming less functional over time. When you meet up to tour with someone or find someone locally to run beacon drills with, you will be assured that it is functional. (I once trained beacon basics to friends in the sand in Hawaii when I lived there for a short bit.) You test the beacon regularly by practicing with another beacon. That would be the way to find out if it is being glitchy or weird (or in the 80s, if your headphone cord is broken, lol)

If you are buying it to ride by yourself in bounds or not, you could go to a beacon practice center of which there are a few out west or just ask a ski patroller at whatever mountain you are at if he will give you a range test to confirm your device is transmitting normally. They’ll probably be happy that you carry one and should oblige you.

Unrelated to your question, but if I was leadership in a bigger mountain ski patrol, I’d want to start a trend that certain terrain and perhaps most of a mountain like snowbird should have a mandatory beacon policy like Bridger Bowl has enacted for some of their more exposed terrain.

I have a family of five tourers, and picked up a couple of last year’s Mammuts-the non pro version- for the kids and I really like them. Huge range, very intuitive with sound and visuals.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. Any beacon is better than a new beacon, Manual doesn’t say anything about main-in check up, but I remember seeing some report from Mammur when used beacon was sold. Ideally I’d like to get something like that. might mail mammut later.

Got it. when you start it up it should show what firmware or software version it ti running. If you are a few versions behind it can be updated. If you want to update it you can mail it to their nearest service place.

It came with latest firmware, 4.00. Im only worrying about shelf-life of beacon and fact that it’s 1 generation behind current models.
