I noticed when going through my profile I have almost 100 notifications. Option 1 is read it, option 2 is delete it. I clicked on the delete button and it takes a while before it is deleted and that is after I get the notification from splitboard asking me if that’s what I want. Process takes quite some time for 1 notification. I clicked on the read button and the only thing that happened was I got a confirmation that the notification was read and it disappeared. I didn’t actually see the notification unless I am supposed to click on the subject line. Not sure what the functionality is for the notifications. Either reading them or deleting them seems to remove them either way. I also get all the tons of emails. Some of them make it to my inbox and some go to my spam. Not sure why if they are coming from the same place.
edit: very strange. my notifications went down to 7 just now as I was typing this all out. It appears all the emails we are sent as the forum is continually being updated with the old threads is now moving these notifications to the read tab. A mass deletion or read option would be handy still.
Thanks for all your work on the new forum, Chris. Obviously, it’s an enormous asset to our community. And I know you continue to work to fine tune it.
As you do, I have some aesthetic suggestions to consider.
1. Smaller font
Compared to the old site, the new site seems to use a larger font and, as a result, has less text and information visible. This creates a feeling for me of being too zoomed in and unable to see enough of the discussion. Smaller text, like two or three font points smaller, could remedy that.
2. Darker font and borders
Right now, given the similar tones and colors among fonts, borders, and backgrounds, everything feels a bit visually muddled. I think darker tones and colors of fonts and borders would remedy that by creating more contrast.
Suggestion. What about dividing up binding section a little more. We’ve already got Sparks subforum why not add one for Karakorum, Voile and Hard Boot Bindings? That way us real snowboarders don’t have to look at what those tight pant hardbooters have to say.
The new site looks great Chris, thanks for all you do for the community! Great seeing you last week as well.
I was having trouble logging in on my iPad, perhaps this is a know issue?
When you click on the member icon next to the search window a drop down login/join appears. Do NOT click on this. Instead click of the member icon again.
The most disappointing thing with the conversion is photo size. I mean, one of the best things about forums are the photos, and having them reduced to the size of a 3×5 card leaves me wanting. Two things here: 1) I totally understand that you’ve gotta have the products and ad column on the right, I know full well you’ve gotta make money somehow. But could that column be narrower, so the forum text column could be wider? 2) The user’s avatar, user name, post count takes up column width space on the left. Could the user’s avatar/info be put into a row at the top of the post, similar to TGR’s layout?
All the other little annoyances are very minor, I’ll learn to work with it. The appearance of it all looks great. It looks like a big step in maturation of online forums. And dare I say it, it looks better than TGR’s. Again I really appreciate all you do for the splitboard community with this site. Thanks!
Ok, I think I have it figured out. Notifications for messages that are really old typically come in from the email address wordpress@splitboard.com. This is the address you want to divert to the spam folder.
New messages that are recent and interested in, come in as noreply@litboard.com. <– notice there is no S in litboard.com. This is the address you want to divert from spam to your inbox. So you can save this address in your contacts or something.
Hmm. Thanks WhitePine. I don’t think its normal for WP to change the domain name like that (removing the S). It makes me think there’s an error in the notification settings at the admin level. I’ll check it out soon.
As for controlling notifications:
You can turn OFF notifications in your profile page.
Go to your profile, click on Settings, Click on Email, change the desired email setting notifications from On to Off.
Another thing to be aware of is how phbbb3 and WP differ in regards to notifications. One side-effect I’ve discovered is that on the old forum, when someone quoted a reply…WP/bbpress treats that as a “mention”, therefore alerting the person quoted through the notification feature. So when the forum was converted, the database is sending folks notifications for all those old quoted replies.
I know it’s annoying to receive all those notification emails and I apologize for the inconvenience.
^^^I only see reply and quote on my posts. No edit option showing even when logged in.
After poking around the admin panel I’ve discovered that the bbpress edit option was set to 15mins. This means you only have 15mins to go back and edit a topic or reply. This is why you couldn’t edit older posts.
In phpbb3 the default edit setting is zero meaning you can’t edit a post at all. Knowing this default setting is sorta dumb, I changed it to allow a topic or reply edit with no set duration. As such, on the old forum you could edit the post forever.
In bbpress it’s not immediately apparent how to set the post edit duration to forever so I changed it from 15mins to 1440mins (24hrs).
Hopefully this gives users a big enough window to edit their posts. If someone needs to edit a post longer than that, please let me know and we can work through it on a case by case basis.
I recognize the need to generate some revenue and I really appreciate the time everyone puts into splitboard.com. This site is a fantastic resource. However, I keep trying to adapt to the new forum design and it’s not working at all for me. My visits are way down since the change and I wonder if this has been a general trend…. Or I’m just a whining outlier.
I’ll keep trying but it’s way less fun now. For me.
Just checking back after seeing the post in the TR’s. I am assuming splitboard isn’t set up for hosting yet right? Is/will there be a limit to the amount each user will have for storage? What I’m getting at I guess is if it would be better to continue to self host instead of cannibalizing our albums when splitboard hosted albums get too full.

I kind of like going though the old forum when I get the notification. It can be interesting to see what we were talking about years ago and sometimes you even get a good laugh out of it.
Soooo…. I know you’re busy, but when you get the ‘recent posts’ plugin working, could you post the link here? This is the only thread I have the energy to find on this site these days without my beloved lazy man’s aggregation link. Very sad.
Another vote for this.
I love this site. I’ve met a few partners that have turned out to be among my favorites. I’ve been inspired by tons of eye-opening TRs over the years. With the help of info from users on this forum I’ve finally pieced together the optimal setup for my riding and climbing style. I also can’t help but think Phantom may never have gotten off the ground the way it did without the consolidation of riders on this site.
That being said, I’ve been a long time contributor and this new format has really got me down. I’m sorry to say it, because I (think I) understand the need for the change and it’s kind of inevitable, but this format, IMO, is super clunky, slow and unenjoyable to use compared to the old setup (for all its quirkyness). Until there’s a decent way to see all the latest posts across all the forums, I can’t say I’ll be visiting with the same regularity, and I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.
I hope you read this as constructive criticism and not negativity Chris! As someone frequenting the site since 2007 I felt like I needed to add my 2 cents.
phillip.ak, I couldn’t agree more. On the new page, it kills me to click through forums and into sub-forums, only to find barrows offering his perspectives on a softboot thread (where as previously, I could see the specific thread title that was most active, as well as the contributor).
nickstayner reflects my thoughts exactly. Thanks Chris for all your hard work on this forum throughout the years! In regards to splitboarding, I owe almost everything to this forum: techniques, tips, motivation, gear setups, dislike of frootboot enthusiasts (barrows), some fantastic touring partners and even better people, the rare piece of montana beta, etc. Because of these reasons, splitboard.com/forums has for many years been my most visited website. I recognize the reasons that are driving the changes as well.
The new site is just tough to use though… it’s difficult feel and lack of ‘new posts’ function are definitely a step backwards. It saddens me to see myself rarely checking the site these days – and when I do, to see the noticeable lack of traffic and activity on the site. I think there’s more activity on the forum during the summer, than the past cpl weeks since the conversion. I would be sad to see splitboard.com go this direction for good 🙁 I mean, you might as well make barrows a forum mod.
Thanks again for all your hard work and time throughout the years Chris!
Let me preface my comment by saying that I know the new forum is a work in progress. I can tell a lot of blood and sweat went into it. Thank you for your work.
Any chance a “remember my password” option will be added? I hate having to type it in every time I open a browser. It always forgets who I am. In reference to the above post, I wonder if that is a common frustration people are having. I’ll get an email with a link to a post that I’m following, but the system doesn’t know that I saw the post unless I login. Because it doesn’t know I saw it, I stop getting notifications when additional comments are made.
That used to be the best way to keep track of all the threads I’m following. But now I forget about some of them and never follow-up. Maybe its just me. For reference this issue occurs on Chrome. Haven’t tried IE.
I know the ad column is a must but I’ll have to vote for giving the text a bit more real estate, wouldn’t bother me to see the topo background border give up it’s “aesthetic” space to the reason this forum exists, sharing knowledge & stoke (posting test pic)
look forward to seeing the user friendliness evolve

(YES! A barrows dig in each paragraph!!)
Agreed on all counts. I actually came here to see if there was any resolution to the “New Posts” function. During times of lower traffic (like now apparently) it’s very helpful to be able to view all new posts rather than just one forums at a time.
It’s a bummer to see traffic slow here during what many would consider Splitboarding’s heyday, just because of a forums switch. I actually really like the new format, (except for the lack of “New posts”). I think the main lack of traffic was caused by having to Re-log in and the fact that many were unable to do that because of hotmail spam filter or something. It took me a while to motivate to do it.
I think we all know that SB.com is not Chris’s full time job, so bear with him, I’m sure he’ll get this stuff dialed in eventually. The man’s gotta get out on the split too! Thanks for providing a spot for us geeks to bitch back and forth for all these years! Cheers!
PS, damn I was gonna add smiley’s where did they go? And man, this lighter colored type is hard to read.

IDK man. Between the holiday(s), work, travel, and splitboarding*, I’m not posting much. I hope others are doing the same. I have two split-writups “in the hopper” I’m just not posting. . . yet. Nothing to do with the new format: just a lack of time.
