My brother moved out to Davis California a while back, this April he asked I come out and visit him. I am pretty stoked on the idea because i have never really checked out cali, i spent a week in san diego a few years ago but never left the beach and this trip i would like to focus on the mountains. I know that it varies from year to year but i was wondering what kind riding can be done in April in California. I am thinking about taking a a whole month to check the place out so I should have time to explore. The month can begin as late as the 15 of April and start as early as the first.

I am going to be chilling with my brother for about 5 days around the 15 of April thats all thats set currently, we would like to take a road trip out of Davis and check out some bad ass stuff with in 6-8 hours by car from there. Here is when input from you locals would be apppreciated, my brother has muscular dystrophy which limits his activities. I would like take him on a backpack trip (meaning I backpack he hikes) he can handle easy hikes 2-3 miles with 500′ of vert or less would be ideal. An easy hike in, then chill for a day and an easy hike out is what i am looking for if you guys have any good suggestions let me know.

On the other part of my trip when i am not with my brother i will be climbing and skiing high peaks in California is the plan. I would like to hit up shasta, mt whitney, lake tahoe and tioga pass and various bad ass places i might find bcd. Is this a good time of year for the above can any of you guys offer suggestions to help me plan a sweet adventure. I will also be looking for partners for the above adventures so let me know if you are interested.

A month off to snowboard California in April?
    Good choice.

It’s a great month for both powder and corn with more daylight for long days and Shasta and Whitney trips. Plenty of easy overnight options within hours of Davis.

Yeah – it would be very hard to get skunked in California in April. It might be kinda early for Shasta… depends on the weather and how adventureous you are feeling.

Also depends on what you want to hit…and whether descent from the summit is desired. There is line for most seasons and conditions, it just depends on how much time you have to spend and the length of approach you are willing to undertake. There is plenty of good snow to be ripped on Shasta in April, you just have to adjust your trip itinerary accordingly.

Planning the St. Jean’s Couloir of Split in April, and possibly Mt. Williamson after the 15th, if your schedule and conditions cooperate you are more than welcome to enjoy the fun.

I will definitely be able to team up with you. Lots of options that time of year in the Sierra. As it gets closer we can plan a little better but I can pull together the troops and we can hit anything from Lone Pine to Bridgeport.
Lots of Nice high alpine lake hikes in the area too for you and your brother. Take a gondola ride up to the top of Mammoth Mountain
Soak in the hot springs (hopefully full of naked hippie chicks) The List goes on ad on  :headbang: :pals:

    Thanks for the suggestions.

PJ, I learned a few lessons in my day, you need to devote of enough time to leisure so that you don’t feel rushed. It would be bummer if I drove all the way to shasta and had bad weather for 5 of the seven days I was there. So I have learned that you should take as long as you can afford both with time off and cash flow. The good news about the down turn in the economy is that I have less to do, so taking a month off becomes easier. Lengthy trips don’t have to involve a lot of cash is you plan them right. Camping is cheap, buy your food from the grocery store, find a few cheap hotels along the way for the occasional shower.

96, those look like they could be fun adventures keep me posted as things get closer.

SF/96, I think i descent from the summit would be sweet, at least reaching the summit even if i had to down climb to where i could ride, would mid may be better for that?

Tex, Lets plan some things once it gets closer.

If anyone is breezing though jackson, give me a shout. With the down turned economy these rich poeple are not building seconds homes so i went part time at work for the winter. I hope it picks up in the spring but until then I am going to enjoy the Pow Turns, once we really start making them here.

All depends on how our winter shapes up in terms of snowpack and wind. April is the prime time to hit some of the big SW side ridge routes (Casaval, Green Butte, and Sargents), all of which are really nice mountaineering routes that usually take most people 2 or more days to complete.

Provided the avy conditions are reasonable you can likely find some sweet turns in West Face Gully, Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl.

The later you go, the more likely that Misery Hill (upper mountain) is more consolidated and icy. But this is varies greatly from one year to the next. Note that all of these routes are accessed via the trailhead at Bunny Flat that has year-round snow removal.

If we have a really big year many snowbridges over the crevasses on the N and E side glaciers may still be intact and solid, but April is likely too late for a descent of the Whitney Glacier. This side of the mountain will have big approaches as the trailheads will likely still be buried, and most of the glacier proper descents are winter/early spring objectives.

The first time I went up Mt. Shasta was a guided trip on May 15, 2006. It was really fun and the weather was almost too perfect – we were broiling in the sun. The guide said that for that time of year about 50% of his groups are turned around by weather. The odds get much better later in the year, I think. But if you have a window of more than 3 days I’m sure the chances of finding an opportunity is better than that. The Shasta summit is an awesome place. I wish I could take the whole month off and go everywhere you’re going!
