hans_solo79ParticipantFirst of all, this being my first post here, hi. I’m glad to have found this little place on the web. I’m still pretty new to splitboarding. Last season was my first, after 18 years on groomed runs and in the slackcountry. I hope for many more to come.
My question is this: Has anyone here taken the Burton Ion 11/12 model out splitting? With that new AutoCant feature, it is supposed to tilt your foot slightly inwards so as to align your hips more naturally when riding. I clearly see the benefit going sideways.
BUT: I’d imagine it to put a considerable amount of torsional stress/pronation on the ankles in touring mode. Any insights on how they wear on a 3,000 ft ascent?
All I have been able to find on this was this thread: http://www.snowboardingforum.com/boots/42118-burton-auto-cant.html. Guy says he didn’t notice any difference standing in them, but skinning for hours on end is a different issue.
For the record, I have a Jones Mtn Twin Split with Spark Blaze binders. I’m not sold on getting the Ions, they just seem to give the the exact specs I’m looking for in terms of flex and lateral stability. Not squishy, but also not super stiff like the Drivers or Malamutes. Have ridden Nitro Team TLSs for the last, what, 10 years and loved them, but sidehilling in them felt really sketchy, probably owing in equal parts to the boot AND my, let’s say, “evolving” technique.
So, any thoughts?

I haven’t used the Ions, but I rode DriverX for several years, both resort and back country. Also rode hard boots for the past two seasons in the BC. Last year I picked up the 11/12 Burton Imperials and 11/12 Spark Blazes and the combination kicks ass. Definitely recommend the Imperials if you want a little more flex than a driverX or Malamute. They are very light as well.

Sometimes I will strap in at a slight angle/cant to put more power on that inside ski edge. Stiffer boot are better though, I use the Driver X.
August 30, 2012 at 11:46 pm #658494numbernineParticipantI’ve been running Ions the last three seasons and they’ve been really good. I too didn’t want as stiff a boot as a Driver as well so they have been perfect.
They have had some issues like the speed zone laces, I rip through all four of them at least once a season and there is also a small piece of plastic that is sewn into the boot for the lace to pass through and that actually ripped out on both boots after a season and a half. I think that it was caused by the additional forces that are exerted on boot when in touring mode rather than a typical boot that is pretty much strapped in 95% of the time. Fortunately though I took them to my local shop, totally out of the warranty period, but after explaining how many miles I’d been putting on them the shop and the Burton rep totally took care of them, fired them off to a repair shop on the other side of the country and got them back to me in time in no time, at absolutely no charge. So ya, to say the least I was pretty impressed.
I think this year I may finally throw down on a pair of Intuition liners because I have had issues with blisters in the past and no matter what I do I can’t seem to prevent them so I was thinking a pair of heat-molded liners may do the trick. Overall though, ya some issues but a great boot!

@PedroDelfuego: Wouldn’t it put more pressure on your OUTSIDE edge if your footbed was canted inwards? Good point about the inside edge though.I’ll look into both the Driver X and the Ion. Might add a Strappy Strap to my bindings, folks have been writing good things about them.

Honestly I stood in them a while and barely noticed the autocant feature so I think its very minimal overall. The flex on these boots is perfect, I have been using Ions on and off for a couple years and this is my favorite model yet. Small stubby boot with good long lasting flex patterns. The driver x felt WAY to stiff for me and I like a stiff boot soft, loose binding. great all mountain resort boot as well, this is my everything boot and for the price it better satisfy. they are overpriced but burton stuff is solid for me.
January 5, 2013 at 7:48 am #658497ColinParticipantI’ve been riding this years Ions as well and honestly didn’t know they had this feature built in. Put in about 7 days on the skin track in them varying from mellow tours out mt baker’s shuksan arm to more involved full day stuff with a camera pack in the Olympic National Park. Didn’t notice a thing with regards to my ankles, they seem to be just fine for skinning.

I’ve also been looking for a stiffer boot to split in and found a shop online that still has 2012’s available for a decent price. how does the est thing built into the boot feel with the blazes? last year I rode (in the resort) hails with est and I had terrible foot pains.
