Got to ride with him earlier this year in RMNP and saw him and Joe at the Silverton splitfest. They were repping for Jones/Karakoram. Both guys were stoked to be involved. Definitely solid guys I could’ve seen riding more with in the future. My thoughts go out to all involved. April 21, 2013 at 4:33 pm #668022 chrishami 194 PostsJesus, this sucks. I had a very bad feeling it was those guys. I just met Joe and Rick last week, both super nice and willing to share info with a new splitter. Ian was also a super guy, interacted with him quite a bit last year, as he was repping Gecko skins. Thoughts and prayers to their families.167 furberg 163/26 Venture Helix April 21, 2013 at 5:07 pm #668023 shaunster 7 PostsI knew three of these guys. I just rode with Rick at RMNP two weeks ago, and we were living it up at Silverton Splitfest last week. I’m in shock, I was biting my tongue hoping it wasn’t what I had heard. I’m really sorry for everyone in this community that knew these guys. Solid, standup guys. Condolences to the families. April 21, 2013 at 6:58 pm #668024 HikeforTurns 1114 PostsI am glad to have met Rick Gaukel. I spent a couple great days in Rocky Mountain National Park with him, pursuing our mutual passion. He was stoked to be alive, and like many of us, achieved that feeling through his experiences in the mountains. Rick passed away yesterday in an avalanche. You will be missed, Goodbye Rick.“To those who have struggled with them, the mountains reveal beauties that they will not disclose to those who make no effort. That is the reward the mountains give to effort. And it is because they have so much to give and give it so lavishly to those who will wrestle with them that men love the mountains and go back to them again and again. The mountains reserve their choice gifts for those who stand upon their summits.” — Sir Francis Younghusband. April 21, 2013 at 7:54 pm #668025 ieism 298 PostsShit, don’t know what to say. My thought go out to everyone who knew and rode with them.http://flatlandsplitfest.com/ April 21, 2013 at 8:41 pm #668026 barrows 1490 PostsI had the pleasure of knowing Rick and riding with him this season, and I was looking forward to spending more time in the mountains with him. Now, I am shocked and saddened. Rick was a dedicated professional, who not only enjoyed splitboarding for himself, but who chose to spread the stoke through teaching splitboarding. His enthusiasm and easy going but reliable manner will be missed. I am really sad that I will not be riding with Rick again, but then, I also think how hard this must be for all of the friends and families of all the victims, and my heart goes out to all of them. Just very sad now, not much else to say, except to know that these victims will be honored in our memories.
