Funny story: we pull into the parking lot and start getting gear ready. I notice a pasty white guy with a huge pro camera in shorts geeking out and shooting photos. He starts chatting us up. Turns out he’s a AP staff photographer, and a photographer for the paper in Rutland, VT. He shot this photo of us starting uphill. Don’t know if the photo was ever printed. My wife finally got a touring rig, so we went out to one of the little hills to practice. She quickly found out that snow out the side ski area is very different. She had fun but it’s a work in progress. There were some solo tours in January with absolutely no action photos whatsoever. Storms really started hitting in mid February. With them came sketchy wind slabs and good turns. And day trips into the Humphrey’s Cirque. There was a little something for everyone; splitbooting, bright sun, and creamy snow. My split season culminated with a local cabin trip. The approach through the pumice mine was already getting pretty burnt, Zen in a mine wasteland, The hantavirus hotel, plush! Splitchimp, splitting, Probably the most frequent flyer slide path on the Peaks, Telemark, And a season primer: We kicked off the season last weekend with a big storm which delivered enough to get out on. Seasons are highly variable, and can be Jan to Mar, or Oct – July, depending on annual and decadal gyrations of the eastern Pacific. I’ve ridden 2000′ in July looking out at 100 deg red desert. It’s ground zero for subtropical jet flows. Flag actually has a deep snowboard history and since the early 80s has had a core group of riders. It produced several early national champs, Transworld’s senior editor for many years, Steward (corporate mastermind), and the brothers Brandon based from here for a while in high school, etc.@sun_rocket December 23, 2013 at 9:41 pm #672727 bs. 246 Postslookin good (especially that topo map… i wish my nat geo maps looked that nice!)flagstaff riding is fun… i had a blast on my one weekend out there a few seasons back. good crew, and better snow than you’d think!
