Actually I might postpone a week. Temps are super high right now – like almost 70 at my house at 6000′. Thin snowpack and wild temp swings don’t inspire much confidence for me, especially with the rain/snow/ice mix that made up the last storm. Hopefully temps will get back to normal next week and give things time to settle.

I am down any weekend, so if you want to get up there I’m sure we can work something out. I prefer to stay overnight, but I could do a single-day sufferfest if that’s what’s in the cards.

Verts work fine for short, non-technical hard-pack pitches. You can kick steps in with the “teeth” on the front to get up icy stuff. I haven’t broken a pair yet, but I can see the damage being done when I kick steps. For me, they work great for mixed conditions ascents where you’ll find softer and harder stuff, with the majority not being rock hard.

I wouldn’t recommend them for solid ice or hardpack slopes over 35ish degrees, as I have tried both was exteremely gripped (my ass, not my feet!) Also keep in mind that they are for ascent only – try to walk downhill in a pair and you will see what I mean very quickly.

Still, they weigh a lot less than crampons. If it is blue ice death sheet I don’t want to be riding it anyway.

A slightly interesting pair of articles on the area made the front page of a local newspaper today. An interesting perspective on how “normal” people see avalanche/snow danger, if nothing else.

June 10/11/12 for Saddlebag sounds good. I’d love to do Virginia Lakes next weekend, but I am committed to an inbounds Mammoth trip already. Maybe I could sneak up for one of the days. Hmm….

Sounds good to me. Early-mid June maybe? We could overnight it if we have to skin up the Tioga and Saddlebag roads…

Nice TR and pics Llama. I can see the snow withering a little since I went up with SFB, Bodhi, and crew. Check this contrast:

Killer photos SFB. I only wish we’d had all week to play up there!

Hopefully Bodhi’s got some shots of the slides for life we took on Saturday. I can’t wait to see those “faceshots”… 😯

Jim – Did you have 03/04 (I think) black Ions with yellow accents? I had these boots with the same problem. They creased right on my lower calf, causing SEVERE discomfort. Towards the end of last season, I couldn’t even walk from my car to the lifts in ’em. I think it was a design flaw on that model year…

For the early part of this season, I was using some Burton stepin boots with my Mission strap bindings until I found some new boots to use. Which reminds me – if anyone needs some unused size large Burton stepins (minus boots) let me know. I got them as a misorder and they’re just collecting dust here.

Sounds like fun – I haven’t been over to the San Gabes this winter, but it looks pretty nice over there from my side of the hill.

Were you thinking tour, laps for turns, sufferfest?

I’ll PM you with some contact info…
