Bring plenty of water. Whippets and crampons can be nice for the final summit climb in hard conditions. paulster replied to the topic 20th Annual Black Diamond Fall Fundraiser Party for the Utah in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 8 years, 10 months agoLooks like at least 3 splitboards in the Silent Auction, plus several sets of skins and some hardware. paulster replied to the topic Keeping up with skiers in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 5 months agoAs both a skier and a splitter, I think it is pretty simple. You can’t transition as fast as a skier unless you seek out pokey skiers. Assuming you are fit enough to keep up on the skinner and social enough to want to talk to your partners on the climb, the best you can do is practice making very efficient transitions, be careful where you stop,…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic Wasatch Splitboard Speaker Series–in SLC in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 7 months ago paulster replied to the topic Exploding numbers of resort skinners!?!?!?!?!? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 7 months agoIt seems like this is getting more and more popular and is seen every morning in the Utah resorts. There is now a growing citizen’s Ski Mo (Split Mo?) race series at Brighton. Maybe more of an alternative workout, like the new skating, rather than an alternative to backcountry? I don’t get the appeal of climbing up dodging everyone coming down,…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic Wasatch Splitboard Speaker Series–in SLC in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 8 months agoLooking forward to this – the Utah Avalanche Center will be there. paulster replied to the topic Wasatch Splitboard Speaker Series–in SLC in the forum Utah 9 years, 8 months agoWe’re excited about this and will be giving away some swag. paulster replied to the topic Utah Avalanche Center Black Diamond Fall Fundraiser Party in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 9 months agoBetter yet – beer and food from Ricos is included, so you don’t need to spring for the beer and burrito. Big silent auction, though, so don’t put that credit card away just yet.Good tactic on the alternative vices. I tell my wife she could trade mine for gambling, smoking, drinking (more), girlfriends, etc. She needs to think that over but…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic Utah Avalanche Center Black Diamond Fall Fundraiser Party in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 10 months agoToday is the last day to get advanced purchase discount tickets. Got a pretty good looking raffle and silent auction coming together. Who is going to be there? paulster replied to the topic Utah national parks – 2 weeks in Mid October? Ideas? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 9 years, 10 months agoAny of the Utah scenarios would be great. October is the perfect time. For slightly more off the beaten path, consider Capitol Reef NP, Natural bridges, or the San Rafael swell/Goblin Valley area. Maybe a loop around Moab, Monticello, Blanding, Hanksville, Green River, starting in Vegas or SLC. You could easily spend a week in Moab and not get…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic snow stability tests and digging pits in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 10 years, 3 months agoThe Rutshblock test has fallen out of favor a bit. The general feeling seems to be that more useful information can be obtained from spending that time doing more ECTs and hasty handpits. The ECT is pretty much the gold standard right now. While for sure there are a lot of factors involved in an assessment, I disagree that it is useless on its…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic Understanding this season's snow conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 10 years, 3 months agoSilver pretty much nailed it. A big temperature gradient (difference in temperature divided by the distance in a snowpack is perfect for growing buried facets, rounded snow crystals below the surface, that don’t bond well (sugar snow). In addition, long, cold periods between storms with the right humidity grows surface hoar (like corn flakes on…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic New UT Avy Clinic in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 4 months agoBump to remind everyone to join us tonight at the BD store to talk Wasatch conditions. This should be good.Minor change of plans for Monday at Snowbird: We dropped the price to $35 and you need to provide your own tram pass, but the Bird will be selling tix to everyone in the class who needs one for half price. So the cost is $35 if you have a…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic 2011 Utah Snow & Avalanche Workshop in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 8 months agoWelcome back to winter. Hope to see a bunch of you Saturday at the Depot. This should be our best USAW yet. Looking forward to the Salt Lake Surf Company event Thursday night. We have our first observation of the season up as well. Lots going on in SLC this week. paulster replied to the topic 2011 Utah Snow & Avalanche Workshop in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 8 months agoWow, that is great to hear. We have tried to make USAW a little more oriented to backcountry users’ needs – more info you can use and less research and public safety oriented. We expect to sell out this year, and, if we don’t, we need to shut the online ticket sales down the day before and charge more at the door, so get your tickets early. paulster replied to the topic 2011 Utah Snow & Avalanche Workshop in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 8 months agoOops – bad link. Try this one. 😳 paulster replied to the topic 2011 Utah Snow & Avalanche Workshop in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 8 months agoThanks for the feedback – I hadn’t heard about that and will make sure that gets fixed. This format is still pros in the am and public in the afternoon – important because the pro session goes into topics that really can’t be discussed publicly because of inside info, ongoing lawsuits, etc., plus it is more oriented to blowing things up and…[Read more] paulster replied to the topic Powderwhore Presents- Breaking Trail in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 10 years, 10 months agoDon’t miss the premier showings in SLC – Brewvies, Sept 28-30.
