pauldrake replied to the topic Are you thinking about hardboots? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 13 years, 2 months ago

Definitely thinking bout it. Actually spent yesterday riding the lifts and toying with gear. I had never ridden HBs (except skiing for 12 yrs). I picked up an asymmetrical carving/race board and an old pair of Nordica AT boot (HEAVY) just to get a rough idea of how HBs might feel. First, I dialed down the angles (previously set) from +60/+45 to ~…[Read more]

Can you buy clothes made in America anymore?

I buy them all the time. They are available in thrift stores and are 15+ years old. 😉 I look like a fool, except every few years something I happen to wear catches on with the kids. Then I look like an old fool tryin’ to be cool.

See below for crazy. 😯 Gets real interesting around 1:30 minute mark.

pauldrake replied to the topic What's This Mean? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 13 years, 4 months ago

This is part of a report I copied from November 2007. I remember thinking the “knuckle-dragger” reference was a bit tired  , but as stated above, the writer probably didn’t mean anything, just being “funny 😆 “. (Although, I did take the effort to copy/paste to a local mtn. board, just to see what people thought. Not much, it turned…[Read more]

Are those Switch bindings on the board on the left?

Yes, I am still rockin’ my switch set-up, at least for BC. My solid board has straps.
As the market faltered and production stopped, I gathered a small collection of boots and bindings that should last me a while. I…[Read more]

Sorry for the thread drift but are you referring to the golf ball surface that appeared on surfboards (and it sounds like windsurfboards) a number of years ago?

Do you think it would work?

Yes, those is them. I hadn’t realized surfers got to enjoy dimples also. They were supposed to “loosen” the board and help “planing”. Sorry…[Read more]

If all the snowboarders start riding splitboards, this could have a significant impact on the resorts. Since alpine skiing simply follows the trends set forth by freestyle snowboarding, then the resorts are going to be dead in 5 years.
Will we all go back to riding chairlifts?

If my experience with windsurfing is in any way similar…[Read more]

:soapbox: I don’t watch many (read *any*) ski movies, except for a few trailers linked here. That said, I loved that footage. I swear I thought I saw that guy almost get “tubed” in the front rider/cameraman’s spray on that following shot. For me, watching folks huck off cliffs is the same as watching a high dive into a wading pool, neat to see…[Read more]

pauldrake replied to the topic How to do a good race in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 13 years, 5 months ago

Take into account I was a skier for years before boarding, so I still use my “skier” mind on my board especially on terrain created by skiers (ie: bumps). There may be more correct lingo for this but the way I approach bumps and steeps (and powder, for that matter) is with an “aggressive”, weight-forward position. On skis, I learned that you can’t…[Read more]

I may not be hip to the latest info but I think “NoPo” (North Portland) is where the young and restless are currently paving the way for the next wave of gentrification. Not sure of the exact lat/lon, but look for the scooter-riding kids with tight, straight-leg jeans, vintage Nikes and full beards(just the guys… so far).
I think all parts of…[Read more]

pauldrake replied to the topic Avalanche classes you've completed in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 13 years, 7 months ago

I took a course in 2000 as part of training for Mt. Hood Ski Patrol. Not sure if it would qualify as Level I. Took two days, some classroom time, reading of previously mentioned books, and some pit digging. I think some guys from Portland Mountain Rescue were leading, but can’t be sure. Turns out I wasn’t much of a patroller (loved the training,…[Read more]

very nice!! I’ve only ridden the snowcat at Mt. Hood and the one you guys are in looks like a luxury coach in comparison 70s school bus we were in.
    Is this down near Gunnison?
I’m planning a resort trip with my in-laws next winter and I am heavily weighting my choices towards the availability of resort offered or nearby snowcat skiing (riding).…[Read more]

It’s probably just me, but I am sensing a real “Extreme Makeover: Splitboard Edition” vibe building here.
I can see the videos now:

Stock footage of natural disaster plays. somber/heart-wrenching music.

So, I spend a really stormy morning lapping a little vert called Bennet Pass clear cuts (yes, that’s just what it is, very exotic). Saw another splitter, met some cool folks and generally had a nice morning. Get to my Cherokee and the back hatch is frozen shut. I push that button and pull like a mother, but it won’t budge. you ride with a slightly modified toothbrush bungied to your wrist.

you feel naked riding without a pack.

you’ve stopped calling the ski-fone at the local resort(s).

you’d rather watch the weather channel than ESPN.

washing your rig is something you plan to do… in June.

Great shots. I was lucky enough to have the week off and went up the Tilly Jane trail Wednesday morning through 4- 6 inches of fresh snow. Only went to 6,000 ft or so, but the snow was dry and fast enough to make cruising through that forest above the cabin a real treat. Sunny and calm to boot!
