I own a CCW Chernobyl pack. It’s an OK pack, and I mostly use it for overnight winter trips. Mine is about 7-8 years old, and the one they sell now is a bit different. (mine has tool tubes, where as the new one has a different system for attaching tools.)
The one thing about my pack is that the ski straps are a little narrow for fitting my split…[Read more]

Hey, welcome to PDX!!
There is lot’s of stuff to ride here, and may I say sheepishly, all year long.
Send me a PM when you wanna head out. There are quite a few splitters here (not all on this place) but they are around. Plus, solo trips up the palmer leads you to “club triangle moraine”…. I have hooked up with more like minded people there…[Read more]

Damn! Looks nice.
How’s the approach and the road?
Maybe, if I have the balls, I am gonna hit this in a few weeks. Looks like there are no sun cups out yet!

Yeah. the weather was really nice, probably too nice.
The snow was a slurpee, but hey, that makes steep lines easy, ya know? :bananas:
The new wax (swix Glacier) makes a HUGE difference. My partners where flailing and getting stuck in the muck, I just glided past them like it was winter!!! 😆

Sweet TR!
Welcome to the Cascades!!!! It’s too bad we could not hook up for a Mt. Hood adventure.

Nice TR!!!
So, is the road open to the main TH, or just to the green lakes TH?
I think I need to make a road trip south next weekend!
I am DONE with Mt. Hood for now. 🙄

Gotta love the Cascades. I will still be riding into July!
Hell, around here you can get turns all year round. :bananas:

One thing that I used to do before I got an AT boot set up, was to ride with Koflach PMB’s, with a Garmont tele liner that had an incorporated powerstrap at the cuff, that stiffened up the boot quite a bit.
I like this set up alot, mainly because I was able to use step in crampons, and it was a cheaper alternative to AT boots. The ride was OK,…[Read more]

Sweet. I must have just missed you guys. I summited the same day around 9, and was riding back down from hogsback around 1030-1100 ish. And yes, the icefall was feirce, and had to bunker some bigger baseball/softball/dinner plate size ice falling off the rime ice towers as the temps rise. My helmet and tools suffered the brunt .

Another question, what about the divide venture splitboard? is good? Better than Voile Mojo?

From what I hear, the divide is a good board, but very expensive. Also, I don’t think it comes ready to go out of the box. You still have to buy an interface kit and skins (and crampons if…[Read more]

OUTSTANDING!!!!!
I have been wanting to get into that area for years, but the drive from PDX makes it seem restrictive….

I will probably be up there on weekends though (as long as the weather is in check) so if you are up for a few extra days, I would love to show you around the upper slopes, and some really nice lines.

Otto replied to the topic Ice Axes-Sizing? in the forum The Gear Room 13 years, 11 months ago
Black Diamond Whippet.
But in general, as stated by others, you want the shaft length to be long enough so that when you are holding the axe in a self arrest hold at you side, the spike should reach the bulging bone in your ankle. It used to be thought that it should reach the ground, but in reality, that’s a little long (great for flat…[Read more]

While they do provide a larger footprint area, they still don’t address the issue of getting the spikes to the edge of a boot’s footprint. This is one of the main reasons I opt for mountaineering boots if I am planning for crampons on ascent.
Well said – This is why I don’t use my soft boots in really dicey situations.
