nothingmuch replied to the topic Sleeping bags – whatcha using? in the forum The Gear Room 11 years, 5 months ago

5 nights should be no issue as long as it doesn’t get wet.

If you’re sweating at night, open up the bag or something, otherwise it’ll absorb moisture and lose loft. This is usually more of a concern on longer trips though. A rescue bivy works as a noisy, fragile vapor barrier and weighs/costs almost nothing.

Secondly, I think the 12°…[Read more]

nothingmuch replied to the topic Best exercise for splitboarding ascent in the forum Tips & Questions 11 years, 8 months ago

Also keep in mind that some of it is also skill and muscle memory, I think the body just gets used to doing the motions more efficiently with experience.

As for cardio, I’ve always been kinda lousy at that, but a few months ago I found out about tabata intervals, and they really helped me increase my comfortable heart rate from like 155-160 to…[Read more]

You could try making the glutes work more (for me it helps to make sure I stay more upright), that could balance out the quad fatigue a bit.

Also make sure to keep a good steady rhythm, even if it’s a bit slow. Going too fast is much more tiring. If you’re 5 minutes behind everyone on a two hour skin up, it’s not a big deal, but if you work very…[Read more]

nothingmuch replied to the topic Summer in CHX – 3 classic north faces in the forum Trip Reports 11 years, 8 months ago

    I wasn’t climbing up so it doesn’t count 😉

Here is a bigger picture of the whole mountain, our way up is on the left side of the rock triangle in the center, and the way down is the obvious tracks on the normal route:

The ladder bridge is across the lowest crevasse on the face. It looks like there’s a way around that crevasse if you walk for…[Read more]

Well, I have no plans for the winter yet, I’m going to university (finally) in Israel this october, so I think I’ll only have about 2 weeks or so in CHX this year. That said, I will definitely be up for splitboarding partners =)

nothingmuch replied to the topic Yosemite climbing in Tuolumne Meadows in the forum Trip Reports 11 years, 8 months ago

I had a similar close call in Wadi Rum last nov, it’s an offwidth that all us sissies climb as a layback. In retrospect I realize you’re supposed to slide up a #4 camalot, but instead I tried to put in the #3 after the #4 but it wasn’t big enough… I started getting pumped and then actually fell and caught myself. Good thing too, because I would…[Read more]

Regarding the bins: there’s the cosmiques hut (can be hard to book) and they turn a blind eye if you take the last bin up and sleep in the aig. midi bathroom so you can start early the next day.

    Snurfer: Awesome! PMing details

Kyuule: well, they don’t say “Alta” 😉

I’m sure Snurfer can post a picture.

I have a hard core tele friend who keeps telling me i need to “get rid of f’ing board” (i hope he’s kidding, he still tours with me though…), and he likes alta, so I want to replace the sticker on his car to see if he notices…

nothingmuch replied to the topic How often do you do snow assessment? (minimally a CT) in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 12 years, 4 months ago

    I dig a pit when:

    a. I don’t know enough about the snowpack history for the season in that aspect/area and I’m curious

    b. when I feel that I need more confidence, i.e. 3×3 filter method, but that’s only happened once, I generally reach for other reduction factors first and stick to low commitment outings, where I have more flexibility

    c. when I…[Read more]

nothingmuch replied to the topic Down Jackets in the forum The Gear Room 12 years, 4 months ago

BTW, one advantage of a synthetic jacket is that it can be worn on top of a shell, even when wet. A non-waterproof down jacket would require off the shell and putting it back on over the down. Waterproof down jackets ones tend to be really heavy/bulky.

Down is nice for winter camping (warmer/lighter), but as a safety measure i think synthetics…[Read more]

    Not voting either.

I have a NS titan and an NS summit (the titan is currently at waiting to be sent by my deadbeat friend to repair).

I can see why someone would prefer the Mojo for instance (i tried that as well), it’s got more pop and it’s much lighter.

Can’t say which is better, but the NS definitely has my vote in terms of personal…[Read more]
