JSteigs replied to the topic Thoughts on Traditional Lace Snowboard Boots? in the forum Boots 6 years, 3 months ago
So I have used Traditional laces, speed laces, and boas over the years. My opinion, is I miss boots with speed laces. I thought they were simple enough, that a break was easily fixable. These were older Salomons though, and they didn’t have different laces for different parts of the foot. Although they did use lace locks down by the ankle so…[Read more]
JSteigs started the topic 32 Ultralight two questions in the forum Boots 7 years, 3 months ago
I’m finally retiring my old ultraights. Now that 32 has brought the ultralight back it has sort of become option number one for me. I haven’t been able to find them in a shop yet. Question one, does anyone know of a shop that is carrying them in the North lake Tahoe area ( Maybe even Reno if I have to). Secondly has anyone tried them and can…[Read more]

Looks like it’s still holding up sown there. Is VA lakes road still open?

I went out for a drive this weekend just to take a look at the conditions on 395 down to Lee Vining. It looked as you would expect, but as a bonus Virginia Lakes road was plowed, and open, not all the way to the lake though. I rode South Peak, the snow was staying pretty wintery. There looked to be good coverage on Black mountain as well, but I…[Read more]

CO splitters I could use some help. I was sent to the southern hemisphere for work this winter and didn’t get to ride much at all. I will be in Breck for work for the first week or two of July with the possibility of a day or two to spare. I realize it would be minimal ( I do a lot of very early and very late season riding in CA), but I…[Read more]

JSteigs replied to the topic Skin length in the forum The Gear Room 10 years, 1 month ago
I have a 156 prior that I trimmed the skins pretty short for. I cut the tails off about an inch or two past the rear contact point. Since the board has a rockered tail, I would guess that the skins are somewhere around 130cm. They seem to have plenty of traction.

I’, sitting in Sunriver, on ski trip visiting my parents. After seeing this, I really regret not bringing my split. I guess next time I need to come up with some sort of excuse to bring one of them along too.
JSteigs replied to the topic Mr. Chomps storage w/in pack? in the forum The Gear Room 10 years, 2 months ago
I used to throw them in a small stuff sack like philip.ak said. I have found that I prefer to hang them on the back of my pack using a small “not for climbing” carabiner (the kind that comes on key chains). I then strap them together with one of those orange stretchy ski straps. I also try to cinch them under another strap so they aren’t to…[Read more]

I’ve run into this issue a few time, always at the worst time (Solid sun cups at the end of the season). For the most part re-tightening the screws was the answer. Just out of curiosity, have the slots for the screws become worn from sliding back and forth? Also do you think you are bottoming out the screws before they are tight? In either case…[Read more]

I participated last year. Even with the bad snow year I found that it helped me get motivated to go out on the split. I just kept telling myself I was doing it for the SAC. It wound up being one of my better years even though the snow didn’t cooperate much.

So to get back on topic here, this stuff does not look to be marketed as “technical” (or whatever you call it) gear. It is more designed for road tripping and car camping.
From their about us page:
” It’s stuff that is made for people that have adventures all over the world while wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. It’s for people that won…[Read more]JSteigs replied to the topic What pack do you use? in the forum The Gear Room 10 years, 10 months ago
I have the Osprey Kode 38. There is no horizontal carry for the snowboard (at least not near your back like you’re talking about). The only time I have carried my board with an ice axe, I carried it as two skis A-frame style. It works pretty well, it keeps the board from hitting the back of my feet.. It carries weight well though, it has a…[Read more]

I don’t entirely trust Rome’s construction. I have broken two, and I new two other people who had broken their boards. This was about five years ago, so I don’t know if that has changed at all. Also these were all broken while riding park, but then again I have never broken any other boards riding park. They are really good about warranties,…[Read more]

Has it struck anyone else that this is entirely marketed to snowboarders, and not a single word for skiers is mentioned. If there argument concerns, being able to choose any board/ski from your quiver, or not using skins, or time to transition (this one really just goes for AT bindings in which the ski must be remove to transition), or loss of…[Read more]

Thanks smuggler, I’ll give that a shot, although with a pack that size it’s rarely full. I would greatly prefer the horizontal carry where the board is between your back and the main part of the pack. My Rome, and a Dakine pack I have both have a fold down pad that holds it in place. I believe this method is more common for snowmobilers. In my…[Read more]

I have two (Ok, if you really count the ones I don’t use for snowboarding I have like 5).
Rome insurgent: It’s about a 30 liter pack or so. I really like the pole carry. The top opening is a bit of a pain in the ass, the zipper doesn’t like to open or close, and the panel doesn’t like to open all the way.
Osprey Kode 38. I got this one for…[Read more]
