Joey
I’d say for your first time just go and camp in the Salt Creek Summit sno park. Plenty of space, day trippers to get beta from and great access to some good terrain. Going from Wallowa lake could work, but more driving and not sure if it’s plowed all the time. If you’ve got the legs/fitness you can drop peaks from the SCS lot.

I leave it on and then when the skins start to get beat(season or 2) I pull it off. Gives it a little boost before i re-glue them.

Some more well known spots around BT and Sisters, and some others a bit more South.
The newer denser snow is a bit of a concern, but you don’t really have to stress about weak layers buried in the snowpack. Just deal with the new snow and keep an eye on the windloads. This heavier snow will calv off most likely but i would be surprised if it…[Read more]

Good stuff, and worthy of discussion. Though much of it is sort of Pass-centric, I think the lessons learned can apply to many heavily used backcountry areas. I’ll cross-post my comments from Steve’s site:

Patrick, I actually think it’s a good thing. Some rain could help increase bonding of the new snow, and decrease the avy risk for this weekend. I got my eyes glued to NWAC for the next few days. I’m going to TJ anyway tho, fuck it I’ll just do tree runs if the avy risk is too high. This much new snow is too good to miss out…

I guess i’m seeing the same thing. Looks like 1 bolt per side if you look at the insert on the bottom of the board.
Not trying to make a big deal about it, just never seen it like that before. Could you provide a better picture that actually shows the hooks up close? I think you may be talking about the tip/tail clips when you mention 3 bolts.…[Read more]

I ride Voile pucks…..am i stagnant Russman? I can’t afford all the new shit, and would rather wait until the kinks are worked out before i can Throw All My Energy into that financial burden. Dude.. you are not the center of the universe. Some people just like to ride snow, and they do it on whatever gear they can.

You’re supposed to be exhaling not inhaling.

EXACTLY BURTON!
It’s like 50 degrees F. in that photo. Now take those parts to 20 degrees F. , wind and blowing snow and see how it works. I’m not saying it won’t, i hope it kicks ass, i’m all for it. But the predictable, biased feedback is just plain stale. To say that using one binding interface on a 55 degree drop is better than an other is…[Read more]

It’s too bad Russman is so biased on providing any beta on anything he rides. In a position to provide valuable feeback to peers, but he lives and dies by the “you’re only as good as your gear” montra.
Of course stiffer bindings will help, but it’s experience that is of most vital importance. I doubt there is few splitters than can keep up any…[Read more]

Nice work, i’m impressed with your drive to ride snow in August.
Count me in on the Green Lakes camping/riding. I’ve got sleds to get us in there before the road opens. The lines right above Green Lake are pretty nice, i’d say better than the lines on the W. side of BT. Depends on what type of snow you’re searching for.

I disagree
ride mode= both systems ride good. Of course when using Sparks. I’d say Mojo is a stiffer board though.
transition= Atomic is not as fast/easy as Voile. With practice it’s all the same. But Atomic system is not better, different but not better. In wet/freeze conditions Atomic parts are more difficult to deal with.
just my 2 cents.

Man this infuriates me, there is just no reason to be that much of an ass.
Being a sled-accessed b/c splitter this really bothers me. It’s dickheads like this that make the rest of us using sleds for access look bad. I respect the wilderness boundary, and anybody around not using sleds. To me it’s a tool, and a pretty necessary one for riding in…[Read more]
