A traction splint in the field, if you are properly trained, serves three purposes: eliminate pain, stablize bone, and elimate problems with blood flow/bleeding. It’s basically impossible to move patient or control pain without. You can put one end of the half splitboard (padded well) in the groin, then use webbing on the other…[Read more] docwild replied to the topic Backcountry safety….rant. in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 13 years, 6 months ago All this is great dialog; Tremper’s book is excellent. But remember, taking a level 1 class and buying all the gizmos don’t necessarily make you safe in the backcountry. And if you, or your buddy, pulls out a beacon, that means your primary and secondary safety mechanisms have failed. Unfortunately, some level 1 courses focus heavily on snow…[Read more] docwild replied to the topic backpacks in the forum The Gear Room 15 years ago Check the black diamond avalung packs. docwild replied to the topic Looking for recommendations on day trip packs in the forum The Gear Room 15 years, 1 month ago I have an Avalung pack. They DO hold a split or solid board, skis in two different ways, and snowshoes too. The avalung has the potential to prolong survival time, I suspect it will become standard among a beacon, probe, shovel. And they only increase the retail price of the pack by $50. Check out one of the Avalung Packs from BD. docwild replied to the topic Modifying Koflach’s for snowboarding in the forum DIY and Mods 15 years, 2 months ago Great question, and nice pink board (used to be mine) 😀 In the early 90s lots of us rode in koflachs in both soft and plate binders. We used the koflach superpipe, later called oxygen, which was the Viva Soft with a taller cuff and liner. Back then we did several things: 1. used the Granite Gear tele cuffs, which were stiff plastic gaiters…[Read more] docwild replied to the topic Pole mod in the forum DIY and Mods 15 years, 2 months ago I have a pair of Leki Bone poles made just for us snowboarders: when retracted they are very compact: I think around 18 inches. Not sure if they still make them. docwild replied to the topic Backcountry Magazine: new focus on snowboarding in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 15 years, 10 months ago Yes, published in 98 (thus written in 96) splitboarding was still new, but I do cover splitboarding. I also write about avalanche safety, mountain safety, first aid, riding techniques, clothing, and such (it’s a compact version of Freedom of the Hills for Snowboarders). CV docwild replied to the topic plate/pmb set-up questions in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 15 years, 11 months ago Try AT boots (instead of PMBs!): ride and skin with them in “Walk mode” They are great for cramponing and technical ascents requiring front pointing. They are light and often fit better than PMB. docwild replied to the topic splitboarding history ??? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 15 years, 11 months ago Does anyone know anything about the Fanatic Randosurf? According to my queries, even the people at Fanatic don’t remember it. CV docwild replied to the topic plate binding w/ highback for pmb in the forum DIY and Mods 15 years, 11 months ago That’s a really great design. But, I need some clarification. By adding a high back, an instep strap and what looks like a power strap, you’ve basically made an AT boot in all but lateral flex. Can you not find a comfortable AT boot? Is the lateral flex of an AT boot too stiff? Do you really like that soft of a forward flex? Thanks.
