Hey Mansi, ultimately, we are all after the elation of the perfect turn, we just take very slightly different routes to get there. It is all splitboarding after all.

If you consider yourself a “normal guy” and don’t consider a discussion about light weight gear relevant to you, that is fine. I don’t see the issue with those of us who are interested in the topic discussing it. I sort of get where you are coming from though. When I was 20, I could only afford a heavier mountain bike. That was fine, because I…[Read more]

I wouldn’t figure the 161 would be big enough for you Barrows, especially in Colorado snow.
At my size I was really hoping for a 156, but I had to settle for a 157. ; )
Another data point, Stoudema ordered a Millisurf. For his riding and at 165-170 pounds Amplid suggested he get the 161. The weight range on the specs goes up to 200 pounds…[Read more]

powderjunkie, here is Peter Bauer’s response to your questions.
The Millisurf – and it’s identical solid-sister the Surfari – is a brandnew shape concept in our product range. We feel that those two offered lengths, 157 and 161, will cover most the rider’s demands. If we hear from retailers and riders out there that more lengths are req…[Read more]

I expect it is designed to be quick and surfy. It probably doesn’t need to be bigger for most riders or it might not scale up well to be a bigger board. Amplid also sometimes only releases a board in limited sizes or even just one size (163 Morning Split and the 156 Pillow Talk).
The Millisurf seems to be Peter Bauer’s take on the the shorter…[Read more]

I have also found that the light weight packs do not have good ride mode board carry systems. Fortunately, I haven’t found it to be a major problem.
I have been using the Mammut 20 and 30l Light and Ultralight RAS airbags. I also picked up the 20 and 30l Light and Ultralight Spindrift models for very low avy danger days. The 20 liter Spindrift…[Read more]

Cbalke just did a video interview with Peter Bauer about the Millisurf and posted it on the home page.
From talking to Amplid and watching the interview, it sounds like they wanted to create a board that is great in powder, but handles a wider range of conditions well. When I spent winters in Utah I loved good powder boards. In the Eastern…[Read more]

That is impressive. It depends on the snow, but the 156 Hovercraft is just right to float me all day at 145 pounds.
A few years ago I had a 166 Prior Spearhead for Utah powder and also picked up a 156 Hovercraft. They actually have very similar surface area and surface area distribution. The Hover craft just didn’t have the 10 cm long tail that…[Read more]

RIP Chris.
My wife and I have enjoyed a lot of your boards. Thank you.

I rode a 160 Khyber as my primary board in Utah and really liked it (more float in Utah snow and almost always riding good powder). When I started spending winters in the Eastern Sierra, I found it was not very good in the wind affected snow / mixed conditions that you often get even on a powder day. It just did not like variable conditions. It…[Read more]

It depends on the type of board, the terrain, and the snow conditions you generally ride in. On west coast snow, you can generally ride a smaller board than in the intermountain west. It also depends on if you are discussing a short / wide design or a more traditional freeride board.
I am 5’9, 145 pounds and typically ride a 158 freeride board on…[Read more]

So, I have around 80 days on a Milligram now (65 on the 158 and 15 on the 163). It is just a great board. My wife is also riding one and, for us, the durability has been outstanding. I am going to get a new one this season, but my two year old one is doing perfect. You would never know it had 65 days on it.
I am going to sell my 163 Milligram…[Read more]

New season follow up from the end of last season. Photobucket wants $400 to keep showing my images, so, oh well.
After my last day of major refining in late March, I had a few months of corn season to really put them to the test.
I am not easy on my boots, especially in the spring. Riding, the Gignouxs performed great in a wide range of…[Read more]

Thanks FlorianS.
That’s perfect. I am not looking for any detailed beta. I am mostly just trying to get a feel of the region and any differences between areas within the region.

Can anyone tell give me some basic info about the backcountry around Durango and Pagosa Springs? I think a couple of riders here are in that area.
We would be there during the winter, so I assume we would need access to meadow skipping terrain to deal with the often sketchy snowpack? Does the accessible terrain get tracked relatively quickly? I…[Read more]

Got my Locus Gear Poles. They seem really nice. I’ll have to see how they hold up. At 145 pounds, I am not very hard on gear.
ozsnowbum, my Locus Gear poles are 168 grams each which is a bit lighter than the weight you measured. The weight I get for one of this season’s Expeditions is 260 grams, instead of the 330 grams in your original post. 92…[Read more]

ozsnowbum, you motivated me to lighten my set up some more.
I did manage to get my hands on a Mammut carbon canister. I am super stoked.
I ordered a pair of Locus Gear poles. Now I need to create an aluminum Whippet for them. Aluminum should work well most days (probably still use steel for bullet proof spring mornings).
I also picked up an…[Read more]

Yes, my Camp 390 crampons fit perfectly. They are the same size as the TLT6s.
They are holding up well, except for the edges of the rubber gaiter. I did take them on a massive schwack, boulder hopping, and loose rock steep sidehilling. I have an email into Gignoux to find out what adhesive to use to glue it back down. The carbon finish scrapes…[Read more]

Nice work ozsnowbum. I have almost the same basic set up.
158 Milligram and will be adding a 157 Millisurf
Kohla skins
Phantom bindings with solo cleats
Phantom board hooks
I do have pair of well used TLT6s, but have switched to the Gignouxs
Mammut Light RAS and Ultralight RAS. I cannot get the carbon cylinder in the US unfortunately (I…[Read more]
