BG, do you have a Furburg or have you ridden one?

No. I read what you guys say about them though and no offense but some of the things I read make me chuckle. Things like the rocker being “perfectly matched” to the scr for insrance. Rocker is constantly variable so that goes out the window the second you weight or flex the board.

The way the boot sits in the middle of a ski lends itself to that design though. On a snowboard you have to force it by reducing the effective edge back to around the bindings only, a pretty major change to achieve, well Im just not sure what it achieves. I would love someone to lay it down on the table for me and tell me exactly why a radius…[Read more]

I made a reverse sidecut nose board last season to see what all the hype was about, Im still not sure.
Theres no difference in a “reverse sidecut” and a long gentle curved nose. Too much over thinking IMO.

BobGnarly replied to the topic Avy 2 versus Avy Pack? in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 8 years, 3 months ago

Well thats wind loaded to the max, convex roll and there are other avalanches visible so yeah lots of red flags. My general knowledge and ast1 training tells me that, Im not sure what else I would know about that after doing ast2?

BobGnarly replied to the topic Avy 2 versus Avy Pack? in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 8 years, 3 months ago

I think it depends, I guess you are talking about a one season delay?
I think if you have done your ast1 you have the knowledge to keep yourself out of trouble, when in doubt stay cautious.
If you do any solo riding the airbag is a big one, as is a quick release binding system.

I think talking about percentages of deaths with airbags is a waste…[Read more]

My boots sleep in the vestibule and get frozen. I just jam my feet into them in the morning, they warm up in a few minutes.

To set up properly for a whole season you want to add a second battery that is isolated through a VSR. Google it. Its a must have.
Run all your accessories off the second battery, even if you run it dead flat your car will still start.
Carry jumper leads, shovel and a recovery strap.
Buy a nice big gas burner for cooking, dont rely on jetboils…[Read more]

BobGnarly replied to the topic Solid board interfaces for split bindings?? in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 8 years, 4 months ago

I mean they break a lot easier than normal bindings, true story that one.
I agree they are tools, specific tools for getting you home when you far from home so keeping the miles down on them does have benefits trust me. Ive been burnt by this very situation.

I have firstlight pucks, they work flawless but no stance adjustment (when was the last time I changed my stance lol?)
The biggest drawcard of using split bindings on a solid is weight savings in your luggage whilst flying. Other than that I say use solid bindings, save your split bindings for splitting as they are pretty fragile and the fewer…[Read more]

BobGnarly replied to the topic New to winter camping – sleeping bag question in the forum The Gear Room 8 years, 5 months ago

This is how I do it.
    -15f 800 fill bag.
    800 fill hooded jacket.
    800 fill pants.
    Primaloft booties.

With this combo you can mix and match depending on the temp, sleep in everything on cold nights or just thermals and the bag when its warmer.
The whole lot packs into whatever gaps I have left in my pack.

Im a honshu convert, you still get epic snow and the terrain is just better. Plus it only gets to about -12c at night which is great when you are sleeping in cars

Hokkaido- 20cm-40cm most days, not many clear days in dec/jan/feb, not much steep terrain
Honshu- bigger dumps but less often though totals are pretty much the same, more clear days, not as cold, steeper terrain, more variety.

LOL so all the things that were “so critical”to the design like the rocker perfectly matched to the sidecut radius, out the window.

Hey firstlight, remember the board we built and they said it wouldnt work for x,y and z reasons? Looks like we were just ahead of the times 😉
