For short runs ( which is about all we have ) I'm looking for a lazy way out. I tried riding pow with skins on and it slid fine but the directional controll was a bit strange. If the skin was recessed into the board it could work.

Harder because I would have had to buy skiis and skins. No way I'd make my spare split board skins narrower to fit skiis. I was always wondering why someone would use those approach skiis till now.
what about making a scale pattern in the bottom like a xc ski? ive done this with alpine touring skis with a small chisel and hammer to turn em into something along the lines of a rossignol bc 125...
could be done with a split and you'll be able to climb still, just not as steep.
wouldnt be able to ride switch but i dont think thats a concern for you
another ski tech i work with cut out the scale section off a xc ski, and then cut out a section of his alpine skis and epoxied the scale section into his skis. it worked just fine for mellow ups and skied good on downhills.
both techniques = climbing 20 degrees or less with no skins

You would still have to rip them but they would only be about a foot long. I'm thinking of these more for long mellow approaches and once the steeps start I would go back to full skins. The fish scale idea would probably work for mellow terrain, Fischers work pretty well but they can be a drag.

I split a board and removed the ptex a while back. The plan is to experiment with a much deeper fish scale concept. Like three sixteenths deep. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Redwood mega fish scales ready for vacuumbagging to the base. Each hump has about an inch of flat for glide. test004 by Huck Pitueee, on Flickr It probably won't work but it had to be tryed. Oh and she's gonna swallow ummmm... Be a swallow
I was introduced to that method this year and its the only way I go for packing the skins for the down. And you can literally toss them back apart at the end of each lap.
I'm not suggesting long term storage like that, but it certainly does the trick for some quick yo-yos
