I hate them, and the footage. This is my rant. Sure they capture the odd fun thing, like somebody stepping off a cliff, but I hate when I click on "TR of whatever Mountain" and I get 4 minutes of your face and snow hitting it, and you looking like a puppet on a string. I hate seeing them at the resort, or in the backcountry, pointed at me, knowing that I could be part of some terrible Z grade ski flick posted to facebook. Gopro on a stick, gopro on a helmet, gopro on a board... Don't hate me, I cant help it.

Feel free to fill the rest of this post with POV footage just to anger me. :guinness:

Even as someone who likes to shoot vids with my gopro, I basically agree with you. I think that most vids just lack editing and production value. They essentially tell the viewer, "I couldn't be bothered to put any effort into entertaining you with variety, but here's 10 minutes anyway."

So here's 4 minutes anyway... :D

Movies, pictures, text... basically any contribution exists on a continuum between shitty and awesome. The double edged sword of the POV is the ease and speed at which you can upload footage, which I think leads to way more contributions than necessary of the type that philip mentioned.
Everyone who posts up POV footage (including myself) needs to remember this: unlike scrolling through a photo TR in which the viewer has total control, you're supposed to captivate someone for the length of your edit.
I liked your edit philip!

I'd mostly agree. What really disappoints me most is image, or camera, quality. Grainy, over-exposed, flattened video sucks. Philip.ak's viddy was better than most. The most interesting POV's are one's that mix stills, scenics, and still video (as opposed to pov video). And editing matters people! Get creative! Mediocre terrain, though fun to ride, makes for pretty meh videos. The best pov is gripping terrain, and videos that mix up angles (forward, rear, etc). And I love timelapse stuff. Bgnight and Jimw, and many others that I can't remember here have put up some good stuff. The bad stuff abounds on every message board I peruse, whether it's mtb'ing, fishing, skiing, etc... Youtube is guilty in the worst way. Such is the magic of the interwebz, you get the best, and all of the rest.
That said, I do not want a GoPro.

Well, glad Im not the only one I guess.

I think I just prefer the old fashioned photo TR that so many have put up, with text to go along with the pictures. To give an example of a video (non pov) that I like, I present this one. Its got dogs and a Mt Currie (I think) Heli Drop. I suppose I like it because its close to home as well.

Obviously I cant embed, but other than the music choice, I feel this is a really good clip. I just cant watch POV anymore, as soon as I sense more than 2 or 3 percent of the video is cam- on- a -stick, I close it.

But hey its not like you have to try and impress me

I like some, others meh...
I don't mind seeing all your ugly mugs for the first time, it sort of keeps it real when we occasionally start sling'n shit at each other...
But what I really miss when it comes to TR's is the (R)eport part!!! I really like reading a compelling story even if the accompanying porn is run of the mill...
More often than not a picture (or POV) does not speak a thousand words, they speak one.... BORING! :?

Ha, ha have a good weekend folks! :guinness: :doobie:

I agree there is too much unedited random helmet cam stuff out there. It's so unflattering for any line that doesn't have cliffs or super steeps.

The way I see it is that video is just another medium to tell a story. If that story is "I went snowboarding, this is the view from the top of my head," then it's not a very good story.

I did like the video by Philip.ak! It told a story about how his day went. There were nice establishing shots of the scenery. I feel like I was told a little story. How many camera rigs do you travel with? Is it just the one pole with many attachments?

Just one camera. I went up the mountain behind town a few days in a row after work and just shot a few bits each time and then mixed the days together. My wife came along one day. She's in the opening shots and a few other clips. She digs splitting.

Pefect example Stien, I quit watching 1min in. love the suit but the nauseating perspective with camera swinging around on a stick looking at the sky most of the time made me realize that "the view from the helmet" is better or preferable to the view from the pole.
If your gonna use a camera on a stick at least try to hold the frikin stick still. :puke:

the most enjoyable vids for me are like mentioned before, still scenics and differing angles/perspectives

Edit edit edit did I mention edit

I think mainly its the fact the TRs have taken a dive since POV. Its now just throw-up(No pun intended) a vid up for every run you ever do. But I dont want to ruffle anyone's feathers, if you enjoy making them and watching them, all the power to you I guess. They still suck
