Rode Argenta today and yesterday. Didn't think we'd feel good about going up the headwall but we managed to navigate up it safely via a pile of rubble that lead us to the ridge. Today was better than yesterday due to the fact that it stayed colder. Yesterday we had two people, today we had five. Yesterday three sizable collapses were heard/felt on our way up. Nothing moved on the way down, not even slough. For shits and giggles we counted the number of switchbacks that it took to get to the ridge; 122 in all, 32 of those were the last pitch

Today's pit; ~9,500' NE aspect... 85cm TOTAL depth, 55cm NEW SNOW (since last week)... Got no results on our EC test, maybe it wasn't representative, who knows. 1.26.12

Overall good feelings were had today, sure felt good to get the blood flowing and the feet stomping again

Buckchow, wasatch surf and I headed up Emigration Canyon to hopefully find some solitude and good turns. The trailhead was low enough to have Thursday's precip fall as rain. The ice sheet that greeted us in the parking lot and the bulletproof conditions on the initial section of trail had me reconsidering the decision to go there. As we gained elevation though the new snow increased and spirits lifted. The snow up high was spectacular, not too fluffy, not to light, not too deep, not too shallow. And of course, coverage has dramatically improved in the last 2 weeks and was sufficient for everything we wanted to do. Clouds were in and out through the day. On the exit the snow stayed good until about 7000', below which sun exposure and rain during the early part of the storm took its toll. Heard no whumfs and saw no signs of instability. Didn't dig a pit though, since all our lines were sub-30. Sorry for the lack of pics, I had no camera. Maybe Bucky or W_s might throw some up here...

super fun to check out a new area. No GoPros, helicopters, or ski lifts in sight. We did see a lot of untracked lines, a big elk, and a lot of scrub. I didn't take a camera and that was a mistake however if I would taken my DSLR mej and bucky probably would have had to pull me up the skin track. Here are two pics I took with my phone.

Lookout Peak??? Did you approach via Kilyon???

Myself; I got a prework line through south facing apsen. Not bad considering it only snowed about two inches in Mill Dn.
No action shots.. the camera crew slept in

Yeah, took Killyon toward Lookout Peak. We never quite made it to the peak though.

Thought so, That north facing has some nice options.... I think that peak has at least ten false summits ... I trail ran (post holed) up there on 12/30 and never quite got to the true summit before the wind turned me back.

There's sad news from an accident on Kessler today. Holding out hope that it's not someone who recently posted.

Not good, very sad indeed...

My condolences go out to the friends and family of Alecsander Barton (Alx88). This is super sad. Came as a shock to me since a guy I know tours with him frequently.
Everyone be super safe out there this season. Our snowpack is really serious..

I got out with Snowvols this past weekend and was amazed by how good the snow was on both NW (low density powder) and SE (heavy cream) between 8000'-9800'... South facing had a morning zipper crust, but it softened nicely by noon and it too rode well within the mix of shaded and wind blown powder. Even the singletrack exit rode clean top to bottom with minimal sketch...
Holy hell there are lines (ridiculous numbers of lines) in places I've never seen anyone else ride... I hope this is more a sign of peoples good sense than a lingering trend. I know very selfish, right? I'm just not used to seeing much more than cat, moose and coyote tracks on most of these routes so it felt very resort like...

Hopefully we get some more storms lined up soon to cover up all those wiggles

I think this is the year of odd low angle zones. Last year I saw a lot of new lines in gnarly zones, and this year I think we will continue to see an abundance of tracks concentrated in sub 35 degree areas. kind of a bummer as those are the zones that you can usually find relief from the sheep heard but oh well. Time to get creative and check out new zones. last weeks tour opened my eyes to that.
