Is there any way to test transceivers other than with another transceiver? It would be reassuring to be able to test the overall integrity of the devise, especially when it could sit unused for more than six months at a time.

Yes, mail it in to the manufacturer every few years for official testing. I did that with my Barryvox tranceivers and usually they come back with a fresh firmware upgrade (for a small fee).

At the start of each day in field, we do a group check where all beacons are checked for a signal...you pretty much need another unit on receive to pick up and hear the sending unit.
