You'll love the new splitty!

Are you the same NYCO from Tacoma World? Let me know if you ever want to hook up for some riding.

Sure am, easier to remember all my logins this way.
Been in the mountains all weekend so far on a "vacation". Keystone Thursday, Silverton Friday, abasin yesterday, Loveland today and Breck tomorrow.
Silverton is the shit. 3rd time there and I can't wait to get back again!

UPDATE 12/26/11

i now have 2 planks! got a diablo 60 tooth ultra finish blade that made easy work of the ape...the core is all wood except for the tip and tail there are inserts, but cut went smoothly...

there are a few areas mainly at the tip and tail where the board rises where the cut got a little shaky, but it should be good to go...got one layer of spar urathane on so far, about to head downstairs to sand and throw on another coat...

the maiden voyage is planned for friday morning up to berthoud to get some experience on the easy touring ascents they have and easier trails to get used to the larger board...

almost there!

(note: tape turned out not to be near centered, but the cut is..)

goal is to have it completed by friday morning to get up and test it out...

got my "J" clips in and touring brackets mounted up last night..didn't take any photos though..

learned to make a small pilot hole (1/16th) for the touring clips and will also do for my bindings, then follow with the forsener bit..the pilot hole will help keep the bit centered (my diablo bit has a "nipple" that is used as a guide), then follow up with the 19/32 bit for the main hole

had some troubles with my first ski trying to center the forsener bit which led to a not to pretty hole for the nut to sit in..

will have a lot of epoxy'ing to do tonight (or tomorrow night)!

but bindings will be drilled and mounted along with the tip and tail clips hopefully tonight...

anyone have some good remedies for getting fiberglass off your skin?

technically have a splitboard now! finished the assembly last night and the epoxy has been drying since last night..so the finishing will be tonight's project..

had some troubles with my pucks due to my holes not matching up properly causing my rear toe puck to be angled slightly

caused a tight fit which wasn't an issue, but caused an issue when i couldn't get the pin in!

so i had to widen one of the holes on my puck to allow it to angle back toward the center enough to allow the pin to slide through...with some dremeling i was able to shift the puck angle by the needed 1/16th to allow the pin to slide through...

over time i would assume that the bindings will slide on easier and the pins will also slide in and out easier..

i have a feeling i will be tweeking things with this board a lot throughout its life...

excited to get this thing smoothed out and waxed up tonight! it's maiden voyage begins tomorrow morning @ sunrise!

Looks disgusting! (acording to my students means: sick)
Nicely done I am looking forward to getting to that stage.
Obviously you will be giving a full ride report when you get back.

2010 Lib Tech Skunk Ape 165 Split maiden voyage.....

Berthoud Pass 12/30/11
snow...non-existent
sun...was nice on the shoulders in the morning, but clouded up in the afternoon
hidden gems... existent

For my first time splitboarding, i must say...i'm HOOKED! beats the hell outta snowshoeing with my board on my back!

change-overs went smooth with the setup..the G3 skins gave me some issues with uncliping the tail clip, but i think i found out a method (it's tight enough where a simple pull on the clip won't free it..requires a tug and maneuvering of the clips)..

area i played in today..
Image

my first adventure up the mountain i found myself going as far as i could to check out the conditions in the back...

Russell Peak>Current Creek Bench
Image

Current Creek Cirque
Image

Postage Stamp and Perfect Trees
Image

after seeing the not so appealing snow conditions of the north chutes area, i turned around and went back toward the big roll...took my first and third runs in this area..snow wasn't too bad in the area where i took this next pic, but the top was very wind blown..

Big Roll and South Chute Roll
Image
Image

My second run was down the plunge, which was a nice little somewhat steep section that had some decent snow coverage, no big turns but there were a few spots where the snow was still soft...plunge is on the left next to the treeline on the left
Image

after i ran the plunge, i came across a couple skiers who ended up helping out a couple snowboarders who ran the nitro chutes and triggered a decent sized slab avalanche...i went back to the Roll region for my last run and was able to get the following shots of the slide..

traverse below nitro chutes..
Image

the slide...it appears the slide was triggered just left of top center where someone ran between the larger rocks and the smaller rocks and the slide spread from the cliff to the top right where the trees started to get thicker..it was a good 8-12" crown at least that ripped down to the traverse
Image

but all-and-all the board handle well, i still have some fine tuning to do on the board but i like the setup...day 1 on the ape, in the books...
