I don't travel much. I'm flying United Airlines tomorrow and was planning on using my kode 38 as my carry on. I measured it up and It exceeds the limit by a few inches. I'm thinking it's just going to depend on which side of the bed the agent woke up on.
If you're flying out of Burlington, they are very lax. However, you might have a harder time coming home.
Usually if flights are full (around Christmas?) they are (understandably) much more stringent. Perhaps a compression strap or two could get you under dimension?

You should have no problem. We just flew from Alaska to Tahoe (I know, dumb move) today and I used my Marmot BC30 as carry on and my wife used her BD outlaw. They fit great in all the overhead bins on all the planes.

Philip, what are you doing in Tahoe? Obviously, you are here for reasons besides snow...
I have relatives on the west shore. We come down for the holidays some years. We were down last year and got absolutely puked on with snow. This year the hillsides are pure dirt. Bummer. We brought our toys in case it snows, but also brought hiking boots. Those will probably see the most action.

Don't worry this is happening while your away-
"SNOWPACK DISCUSSION: 34 inches of snow has accumulated at Thompson Pass over the past 36 hours. A blizzard rages up there today and is dumping up to another foot with northerly winds to 80mph creating conditions of intense snow transportation. Numerous windslab avalanches have been observed along the road corridor"
