i'm looking to buy my first winter sleeping bag and pad. i have been told by a few very experienced alpine tourers that along with boots, sleeping bags are what will determine how much fun you have on an overnight trip and to buy the best down bag i can afford. i'm willing to spend around $500 for a down bag that's rated to at least -15C. packability and warmth are the priorities. any recommendations? also, what do most of you do for a sleeping pad? inflatable? thanks in advance for advice!

My wife just bought a Western Mountaineering bag that is super plush. Light too. I don't foresee replacing my winter bag anytime soon but I will eventually get a WM bag. That said, while shopping for my wifes bag I was also impressed with the North Face bags. Specifically the mesh pocket for headlamps ect. and the fleece hand warmer inside the bag.

Sounds as though you have a good budget, so you will have no problem finding a sweet sack.

Stay warm.

Western Mountaineering Antelope. You can get it with or without a Gore Windstopper fabric. I prefer without since it will breathe better.

Also look into Montebelle and Feathered Friends

Oh shit you just mentioned Western Mountaineering. Be careful or someone around here might get mad at you for liking nice gear.

One thing to keep in mind is that down becomes almost worthless once wet. Not sure what type of winter camping you do, but synthetic may be a good option as well. I have one of each, both Marmots and go with which ever bag is best suited for a particular trip or situation.

thanks for all the advice. mainly want this for hut trips so getting wet shouldn't be too big of a concern.

right now, i'm considering this bag: http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/SleepingB ... ag-12c.jsp

i'll be sleeping with insulated layers on, so hopefully that will take my rating down a few more degrees.

and this pad: http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/SleepingB ... ng-pad.jsp

That's another issue that's been heavily debated if you do some research. I generally try to sleep in as little as possible. Definately wouldn't want to wear any layers I had potentially toured in, etc. earlier that day

my plan is to have a down shirt/pants just for hanging out/sleeping in the hut with. so i'll wear that and a clean set of 1st layers, which will be used for the next day's riding, to bed

might be able to get this bag for $240: Rab Quantum 800 (http://www.livefortheoutdoors.com/Gear- ... ance-2009/). but i need to decide pretty quick, like by tomorrow. how does it compare to the western mountaineering bags like the versalite or the antelope? should i pull the trigger?

i personally wouldn't go with the exped downmat for a few reasons.
1- its heavy
2- not enough insulation
3- if its punctured or leaks its useless, potential disastrous night.

i prefer thermarest 4 season ridge rest with aluminum siding. or ensolite foam pad.

i sell downmats all over here at my work, but i don't really recommend them for mountaineering or backcountry skiing. they are best for plush recreational 3+season backpacking.

if you are just in huts it could work, but i like to think of my pad as a survival piece in case i'm injured or pinned down in the mountains away from camp, as a sleeping pad, and also a standing pad for around camp. with foam you can beat it around, where you'll have to be careful with the downmat.

Check out Nemo's Tuo pad. http://www.nemoequipment.com/nemo2011-tuostandard-pad
This is what I use in the winter months. It's the warmest pad that I've ever used and has a "redundant" dual chamber inflation feature that's gives the best piece of mind of any pad and improved comfort.

Exped: I just destroyed an Exped sleeping pad on a bike touring trip this past weekend. It was not a puncture, but an actual fabric failure that was impossible to repair in the field. Flimsy and expensive; never again.

For bags, check out the Marmot Never Summer. It's a good value and rated at -18 C. You can pick them up for as little as $200 on Google shopping.
