Still some excellent turns to be had. Found some up at Shasta on August 3rd. 42* at the TH at 3am. The snow was frozen hard as rock though. Two weeks ago, snow drifts blocked access to the TH. The last tree was cut on August 2. I was the first vehicle to get to the TH for the summer.
Booted up to treeline. Pretty suncupped at first, the snow was still extremely firm. I ended up booting my way the whole time. Could have left the skins at home to save some weight!
August is my 20th month of skiing in a row. Looking to keep my jib going 'till December to complete a full 2 years of skiing all year round - at least once a month.

I had forgotten my helmet. So I ziptied my helmet cam to my goggle strap and got a bumpy video of the turns. Should have started earlier, the smooth snow was above 12,000'. As soon as the sun rose, the heat started. While it was a cool mid 80's in the Napa Valley, Redding reached 100* Turn around time was around 9-10am. Rock fall had started. The snow was getting soft.

I climbed Shasta in early May about 5 years ago (I think it was '06 but I'm not sure), and there was less snow then there is now..a full 3 months deeper into the year.
1st vehicle to the TH? Awesome. Way to go on your 20 months..I need to get out before the end of this month to secure my 17th. I'm not hell bent on keeping the streak going like I was last summer at this time..but I figure as long as I can get turns in...who cares if it's August or September?

Yeah, this year is pretty good. Not as cool as last summer though. I got turns-all-year for the first time last year. I always go up to Shasta every summer, but it's usually too much work for the jib by September. I've skied in August a bunch of times, but never with this much snow. August turns on Shasta have always involved hiking/bouldering to 12,000' just to GET to the snowline. It's just above treeline right now.
This is also my 20th year of jibbing up at Shasta. Got turns on the north side for my very first trip to Shasta in the spring of 1991.
I used to take 4 weeks off work in late May/early June and live out of the Jeep, following the trailheads as they opened up. Brewer Creek has always opened around late May/early June.
