i have just set up my prior khyber split for the first time and noticed the hooks are very tight. i have not been able to unhook them yet because i am afraid of breaking something. Is there something I should know or do for the first time to unhook them? The instructions that came with the board didn't say anything about this, and searching the web was of no help.

Just give it a pop!
Its way better to have them too tight than too loose, they will likely break-in a little.
Also they can get really tight on the hill with snow and ice stuck to the board.

Undo the tip and tail clips, then support the board half with the hook pointing down on your foot. Then, give a whack on the top of the other half with your hand. They should pop loose. Just reverse the process to put them together. Better tight than loose.

so I'm not trying to move the hooks with my fingers, but just trying to pull each half apart from one another?

Yep, just slide one up, and one down. They do rotate, but you do that after you have separated the halves. I usually just undo the tip and tail hooks then take the board and drop the left side half on my boot. They pop right apart.

In other words, you want the to slide one half up and one half down. The bindings must be off and the tip and tail unhooked. You do not unhook the chinese hooks by hand.

Exactly. Rotating the hooks is the final step, after separating the halves, and some people don't evan bother. When putting the board together I find it sometimes easier to "fold" the board a little longitudinally to align the hooks to start, then finish with getting them nice and snug with a little whack at the end. You'll get the hang of it right away.
