This was a fun project.

Started off removing the high backs and scraping off all the foam and padding.



After using goof off (which also removed all traces of paint) these bases look sweet.

weighed one of these with the pin in at 980 grams without additional machining to lighten them up further yet. I kind of like how clean they look as is, but could get lighter than the Spark Fuse with little effort and come close to Karakorams weight.

Other binding weights pulled from the Karakoram Spark thread:

1 stock Spark Fuse (med? or med/lg?) binder w/ pin: 960g
1 stock Spark Blaze size medium binder w/pin: 810g
1 stock Karakorum size medium binder: 930g

Just got done drilling and machining off more material. New weights and pics tonight!!!

Nicely done! I'm guessing the welds will add some stiffness not achievable by simply bolting the binding to the slider track?

This inspires me to follow thru on attaching something like the Voile light rail pieces to the baseplate of my Nitro stepin plates. I'm out to garage to see what material I can find

Absolutely!!! It will allow me to machine a lot more material out of the bases. I'll also be lightening up the heel cups and high backs along with stripping the rest of the paint.




I machined out a test article to see how much time it would take. Going to have to wait for access to a cnc mill to make the next ones, but found that there were far better ideas to exploit leaving me with the setup I am working on now. They are waaaaay less expensive and better quality. Could end up lighter than I first imagined!

So...it came in at 930 grams (tied with Karakoram, beating the Fuses and a possibility to give Blazes a run for their money). I think I can still lighten this setup at least another 10-15% without sacrificing any strength. It will have to be done on the next binders made as I like how these ones currently look. Those are the sickest DIY bindings ever made!
The only thing that concerns me is the bases are very similar to the original Ignitions and I wonder if these will end up cracking like mine did. No idea if the stress points are the same. Obviously who cares cuz you're saving shit tons of money and those are sexy as hell, but they just look really similar in that regard.

Seriously considering making a pair of these of my own (w/ your help of course) just for backups, loaners, w/e. I'm considering using some Ride LX as they are all one piece aluminum bases and a tad cheaper on ebay to find.
If you made these 5 years ago they would literally be the hottest bindings ever made.

Hey Rughty, did you machine the lightrails yourself or have a shop do them? If a shop, how much did they charge?
