Curious as to what size boots those are and what tech. crampons you have that fit them and are suitable for vertical ice lines? If I did that to my 11.5 Malamutes there is no way I would find tech. crampons wide enough (except maybe some older Rambos) to fit solidly enough for vertical ice.

Russ, what kind of boot is that? How do you feel about the thickness of the soles? I had Gabriel do the same mod on a pair of Driver X's. I'm stoked on them but the mtneering sole combined with the original sole is super thick. I think he was unable to shave down much of the original sole due to it's construction so I ended up with a little more lift than I like. I'm short though so maybe it's not such a bad thing Looks like the height ended up perfect on yours. I'd advise anyone going for this mod to really think about how easy it will be to modify the sole of the boot you send in, probably want to get Gabriel's advice about that before sending them in.

Hey, all you soft boot manufacturers. Yea, you. See this? Yea, why are none of you... hell at least one of you making a boot like this? And before you say something about the market and economics, just slap some big shreds name on it, maybe rebrand traditional laces are pythons or something, say the Vibram sole increase boot to board feel a fucktillion times and some other made up shit. We'll buy it because it's legit, and those with wallets bigger than brains will just pad your numbers. See, we win, you win, and that dood with an Alta sticker on his snowboard still loses.

Hey 96avs01:
My boots are US M9.5. I think this mod has been done on boots as big as US M13...
I'm still figuring out which new crampons I'm going to buy. I'm thinking of going with the Black Diamond Cyborgs. They seem wide enough... They are a semi-automatic design with a front basket and clip in the back, and have the spike placement and shape I like (ie. removable vertically aligned front points and side to side aligned midfoot spikes).
These are 2010 Ride Strikes. I spent a long time finding a boot that actually fits PERFECT. I rode on them once before I sent them to Colorado, just to make sure I actually liked them!
The way Gabrielle made things so light and thin, is by completely removing the original sole and foam. He left only a thin fabric membrane between the original bottom and the new mods. This way he could focus on completely redesigning and rebuilding the boot's lower. He attached the new shank, sole etc.. by hand stitching on leather strips, and then riveting the sole to those. From the looks of it it seems totally bomber! I guess only time will tell!
Hey maniacdave:
I AGREE! Lets push buttons!

Nice! Sounds like he keeps refining his technique with each pair.
I think you will find that the width between the vertical tabs (which hold the front strap and guide the heel) is going to be too narrow for the width of that sole. While they didn't make them in hybrid attachment style the older Grivel Rambos don't have the tabs to worry about, though they are rigid design and not much fun to walk in (and your sole doesn't have a toe welt). Hope you find something that works.
