(cross posted from sbf.com) Back on September 4th I placed an order for a factory custom split summit-R with Vince (aka Vman) at Never Summer. I was very excited to find out I had placed the first order for a factory custom split & I would have serial # 0001. (I place my order the same day Never Summer added the splitboards to their website. hahaha)
The whole process of working with Vman & Never Summer was more then I could have hoped for. Vman sent regular email/voice mail messages about the progress Never Summer was making on their 1st factory splits & on my split in particular. How exciting to have NS calling & emailing to give regular updates.
Fast forward to last week. Vman informed me my board would be done & ready for pick up before the weeks end.
On Thursday(12/17) I drove up to the NS factory & was able to meet just about everyone who works at the NS factory & tour the factory. Vman said when I arrived that touring the factor is the adult version of the Willy Wannka factory ... & he was correct, I had so much fun. It was cool to see Tim & Tracy's first boards they made & to see some new designs & some of next seasons top sheet graphics.
It was great getting to see every step in the process of making an NS snowboard. Vman also explained what materials were used, why it was chosen & the history NS has with the supplier. As you can tell this wasn't a fast walk through the factory at all. I got to watch every single step in detail & meet EVERY ONE. It was awesome to meet Tim Canaday & find out he did a lot of the work on my splitboard, I was able to meet everyone who touched my board or who had a part in its creation (ahem Justin & Ben Blaho).
My split is a 164 Summit-R. Before the pictures I want to point out the new top sheet. It could be the first board sold with this top sheet. This is Never Summers new tech... refereed to as: Carbonium(SP) top sheet. Vman reports he has a seasons worth of riding a board with this new top sheet & it shows minor to no wear at all. It looks like carbon fiber weave badassness.

I finally got a few tours under my belt with my new NS Summit. First, I have to say that I also dealt with Vince and it was a pleasure working with him. Very cool guy. He gave me some history behind the company and it made me feel good supporting these guys. I started riding NS boards last year after riding the SL at a demo day the season before. Being a instructor of many years and being a bit techy, the rocker/camber thing made the most sense to me. You can ride deep pow without having to lean back on your back foot a ton and you can also lay out carves on groomers. One board that does it all was a totally new concept for me, considering I have had a 4 or 5 board quiver in the past. Anyway, at this point I don't think I would purchase a board other than a NS. As far as the Summit split goes, it did not disappoint me. Between the r/c and the tapered sidecut, it had amazing float in the pow. Skinning on both hardpack and fresh pow was easier than it had been in the past. Even in the tight trees and on the packed powder, where my previous board would have been like trying to steer a tank, the Summit performed close to just a regular board. I have a pair of the Voile Lightrail bindings coming in about a week. I imagine it will make the setup even more amazing. I guess what I am getting at is if you are buying a new split, I would highly recommend the Summit.
