Hi,

I would like to know do you guys have any ideas where you can find huts in the Montana area? I have looked yurts at skimba.com, but do you have any huts where you can skin and you can stay couple of nights and at the daytime make little tours?

I have one page www.recreation.gov, but I haven't find any good place where you can also ski.

Hope you get the idea what I mean...:D

I think there is one called the Hellroaring hut in Montana near Yellowstone NP. Don't really know much about it except there was a guy killed i an avalanche nearby and they made the movie a dozen more turns about it. I think there might be a TR from a trip there on here somewhere.

Google that shit.

OK, thanks. In Austria they have huts middle of nowhere and you can just skin there and spent a couple of nights eating homemade food and doing day trips etc. You can just go there, but here, as I have read, you always have to have someone to guide you etc. I would like to find a nice place where to spent christmas with my bf and my split :)

Your recreation.gov link is your best place to get into backcountry cabins. Most that offer good backcountry potential would be best accessed with a snowmobile as they aren't really in the middle of great terrain - just close to it. You can rent 'biles in several places such as West Yellowstone, Bozeman, and Cooke City. Unfortunately we just aren't set-up like Europe or B.C. for backcountry facilities.

There is also a yurt at the edge of the wilderness boundary at Cooke City. It has been rented through Cooke City Bike Shack but I'm not sure if Bill is still running it or not. Cooke City chamber of commerce may have some info. Feel free to pm me if you want more detailed info. I've stayed in several of the Forest Service cabins and can help you with beta if you have any place specific in mind.

Another option is use of the Rocky Mountaineers cabin up on Little St Joe's peak just outside of Stevensville, MT which is 30 minutes south of Missoula on Hwy 93. The Rocky Mountaineers are a local hiking group and the cabin is open for local use. Here is a link to a page about in on their website. http://www.rockymountaineers.com/rmcms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=56

A friend of mine is also involved with a new backcountry lodge, called Altoona Ridge Lodge, that is opening for ski trips this winter. I was just up to it last weekend and it is an AMAZING get away! They have 3 cabins, one for sleeping quarters, one with a kitchen and lounging area, and a third with 2 showers, bathroom and sauna! It can be upwards of $200 dollars for a weekend, but it is basically all expenses paid. For that price they will snowmobile your gear up (you have to skin the 4 miles to the cabin though), food is included as well as guiding for the weekend.

Here is a link to their website, although it is under construction at the moment. http://altoonaridgelodge.com
They also have a blog: http://altoonaridgelodge.blogspot.com/
Also, If you are on facebook just search for Altoona Ridge Lodge

Just remembered there is another lodge near Hamilton, MT about an hour down highway 93. You can drive quite a ways up the mountain and only need to skin about 3/4 a mile to get in. Here is a link with info. http://backcountryfocus.com/Downing_Mountain_Lodge.htm
The owner is a VERY cool guy. He has a ski blog that will give you some info on a lot of places to skin/ride in the Bitterroots. His old ski blog with a bunch of bitterroot trips reports is http://www.backcountryfocus.com and his new blog is at http://www.backcountryfocus.wordpress.com
